With regards to the question of renting versus just buying propane, I have seen this subject come up a few times here on the list and on the BBS site too.
Companies like for you to rent the tank from them because you become locked onto them as your sole supplier and they get to charge you a higher rate for the propane. If you own the tank outright, which costs money up front, you can buy from whomever you choose, often times at a lower price point.
