They may leak without your knowing it. Any repairs are far more expensive. Even small earthquakes can cause a leak even in a new tank, otherwise new may be fine, and a well made tank may do well for decades, but will always be a risk. In a few years oxidation sets in,  or trash leaching off inside of tank can clog system and have to dig up tank to deal with it. et al. Maybe not as severe with propane as with gasoline or home heating oil or diesel. Just so much easier and safer and less expensive above ground.
