Current Chatham County districts stifle direct representation on the BOC

County districts and representation on the BOC

Hi everyone:

I have a question concerning the districts within the county in relation to the county commissioners. Under the current system (please correct me if I’m wrong) the entire county votes for commissioner candidates for each district. So as a Pittsboro resident I’m voting for candidates to serve other districts. I see this as not only unfair, but downright discriminatory (as far as socio-economic status and urban/suburban/rural status). It creates “power blocks” in Siler City and Pittsboro, and denies direct representation on the BOC. So those that live in these areas are deciding who represents the rural areas, and the voices of those in rural areas are drowned out. I believe this is taxation without representation. A candidate may say they are representing their district, but we all have seen politicians say one thing and do another at all levels of government. This system should be changed IMHO.

If I have my facts wrong please let me know. Thank y’all in advance.
