Regarding black bears in Chatham.  I enjoyed reading Craig’s words about black bears, and couldn’t agree more. When back packing in the mountains of North Carolina, I was never afraid of black bears, as I’d never, ever heard of one harming a human. I did string up my food in a tree (ha ha) at night.  Now, out west, I was afraid of meeting a grizzly, even took the advice of veteran backpackers for a very short time, to attach bells to the backpack. I soon discovered that not only did I not see an grizzlies, I also didn’t see any birds, marmots, or anything else!

Since I moved to Chatham 30 years ago, there are so many creatures I don’t see any more, it saddens me. And not just because we humans are in the chain or thrival or extinction, but just because they were so beautiful to see, wondrous to hear. If we want the natural world to keep going away, it will, and so will we. Oh la.
