Are you interested in superheroes, Gothic horror, or fantasy? Do you enjoy novels and movies like The Hunger Games, X-Men, Divergent, Oryx and Crake, Ender’s Game, and Lord of the Rings? Have you been curious about how to write stories that fall into the category of ‘speculative fiction’?

In her two part workshop, author and gamer, Samantha Bryant, will introduce you to this fascinating genre and give you tools to write with.

Speculative Fiction is an umbrella term that includes several smaller genre designations: science fiction, fantasy, horror, paranormal, alternate history, etc. Speculative fiction is an exploration of “what if” questions, especially those that are not based in generally accepted reality.

The course will spend some time exploring what speculative fiction is (definitions), look at some examples in order to pull a list of characteristics and best practices, then do some writing exercises to help students develop an idea for a speculative fiction story. Authors that we may draw from include Octavia Butler, Margaret Atwood, Joe Hill, Orson Scott Card and others. In the second session, we’ll workshop each others stories and provide feedback.

Dates: Saturday, July 9 & July 30, 2016; Cost: $60.00; Location:  Pittsboro (room TBD)

To Register: Please call 919.545.8044. Registration will close Thursday noon, July 7.

Crafting of a Bestseller: The Nuts & Bolts of Harry Potter. Improve your writing under a virtual best selling mentor. This course provides and intensive study of novel writing craft techniques using JK Rowling’s Harry Potter as a guide. Students will apply techniques learned in their own work in progress with feedback from students and instructor. This is not a workshop about writing fantasy, but rather about how to learn techniques from a bestseller in order to improve your own writing and style.
