Subject: Don’t Forget: County-wide Book Drive to Benefit Elementary Students

The Chatham Education Foundation and the Chatham County Schools (as part of Chatham Reads) are operating a Chatham County wide book drive from April 25th through May 9th. We hope you can help!  We can extend a few days, so please drop off when you can!

Why?
– Statistics show that two out of three children living in poverty do    not have books in their homes (Source: National Center for Children in    Poverty, 2013)
– More than 80% of children from economically disadvantaged communities    can lose one to three months of reading skills over the summer. This can    add up to 3 years of learning loss by the 5th grade leaving them lagging    behind their more affluent peers.

How?
– CEF and CCS will host a free book fair at two elementary schools in    June 2016. Virginia Cross Elementary hosts 98% of their students on the    free-and-reduced lunch program and Siler City Elementary hosts 92% of their    students on this program.
– The book fair will allow students to self-select books to read during    the summer months.

How can you help?
– Donate gently used or new elementary school level books to our book   drive on April 25th – May 9th. Please drop books off at any one of the 17   Chatham County Schools, the Central Office or McIntyre Books. New books can   be purchased at McIntyre’s for a 20% discount.
