Subject: Re: Proposed 2018 Chatham Budget

From the Chatlist on Wednesday, the proposed tax increase is to fund:

  • A new elementary school in northeast Chatham, slated to open in 2021, $30.6 million

and

  • An expansion of the planned new high school in the northeast from an initial capacity of 800 students to 1,000 students (maximum capacity of 1,200 students), slated to open in 2021, an additional $5 million in the CIP

Northeast Chatham County is nothing more than Chapel Hill Light, home of the much hyped Chatham Park and Briar Chapel.  Why should the rest of the county be asked to fund (school) improvements needed because of their population influx and for their use?

  1. It would be appropriate to surcharge new influx for the cost of additional educational facilities. Each new home should be surcharged the cost of educating 2 children; this includes cost of new facility, teachers, books, etc.
