Subject: North Carolina Opportunity Scholarship deadline (March 1, 2016)

Chatham County Parents,

Paul Stam, House of Representatives, has relayed the following information pertaining to school choice in North Carolina. Haw River Christian Academy is an approved school participating in this program.

The application period opens today (February 1) for the Opportunity Scholarship Program for the 2016-17 school year. Those new applicants who apply by March 1, 2016 will have priority. Current scholarship students who are enrolled for the spring semester of 2016 will have priority as well. Funding is appropriated for approximately 6,000 scholarships. This is the first year that we have a free and clear enrollment period without any pending legal challenges.

Students must be currently attending public school to receive the scholarship *unless* the student is entering kindergarten or first grade. Income limits, a list of participating private schools and other details can be found at www.ncseaa.edu/OSG.htm . The Opportunity Scholarship Program is for eligible K-12 students who may want to attend a private school.

Because the program is already funded for 2016-17 and faces no legal challenges, I believe that over 6,000 applications should be filed by March 1, 2016. Below is a list of resources available to you:
