About 10 years ago, I discovered a number of roof nails tomb-stoning on my southern facing, shingled roof, which was ~10 years old. In addition a lot of grit was accumulating in the gutters on the steeper sections of the roof.
I started researching both items, only to discover a couple of things:
1. Our neighbor and others around the area were experiencing the same tomb-stoning, believed to be caused by using quick growth trees in the manufacturing of plywood, high humidity and drastic temperature changes experienced on the southern facing roofs. In the not to distant past, many deck owners experienced this tomb-stoning with nails used to retain deck boards, which is why we all use screws now.
2. The steeper the roof the less expected life from shingles…. Need to read the fine print. The warranty is betting most people will sell way before the 20 or 30 year expected life or marketing scam!
The sound experienced in old farm houses, is the result of the metal being installed over horizontal purlins, leaving 80-90% of the metal unsupported. This was done to save money and resulted in a nice resonant chamber, amplifying the sound. With today’s construction, the roof deck is made up of plywood or OSB, providing 100% backing and an excellent sound dampener.
Recommendation – If you plan on replacing your shingles with metal, remove all your shingles, repair any decking issues and have a high quality underpayment installed, followed by all the proper trim…. A number of roofers try and low ball the price by avoiding these critical things, only to have the home owner find out later…..
When I finally decided to do metal, I reached out to fellow Chatlister’s and found Dave Person, located in Bear Creek.
Dave did an excellent job and I have referred him to many other happy home owners.
My neighbor went with the cheep guy, who installed it over the old shingles, did not spend the money on all the trim, and had a number of leaks down the road. When he tried to get the original contractor out to repair it, discovered he was in jail. Then he called Dave as well…..

I too could use some info on who does metal roofs and who is recommended for doing them. Our roof is 16 years old this year, and I’ve noticed that more and more of the grit from the shingles is washing off in heavy rains.
I haven’t inspected the roof yet (need to get up there and see what it’s looking like up close) but when I do replace it, I’m really considering a metal roof instead of having it re-shingled.
Additionally, for those of you who DO have metal roofs, do they sound as melodious in the rain as they do on an old farmhouse? I remember laying in bed in my family’s old farmhouse that had a tin roof, listening to the rain. Nothing else sounds like it, not even metal awnings.
