Subject: NC issues final permits for burial of Duke Energy coal ash in Chatham County

Regulators in North Carolina issued water permits late Friday that will clear the way for Charah Inc. to move coal ash from Duke Energy’s (NYSE:DUK) Dan River and Cliffside plants to a clay mine in Chatham County.

The Division of Waste Management approved the water quality monitoring plan for the Brickhaven Mine site in Chatham County, and the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality issued the final approval to proceed. The plan to bury coal ash at the mine has long been opposed by local residents.

Charah now has all the federal and state permits it needs to move coal ash to the mine.
