It was clear as Andy Millard walked into Lincoln County’s Democratic headquarters Friday evening that the elements hadn’t derailed his plans.

Thus far, Millard is the only Democrat in the race to unseat sixth-term Republican Rep. Patrick McHenry.

“I do not know (Millard) at all,” Deb McManus said. “Education is the number one interest for me. It’s always been a primary issue. I would like to know that that’s as important to him as it is to me. After that, I feel like we need somebody who is willing to listen to his constituency and I’m hoping that he’s that kind of person.” McManus, a Lincoln County resident since March, said it was unlikely she’d vote for McHenry regardless..

No stranger to politics herself, McManus served for nearly a decade on the Chatham County school board. She was a Democrat state representative for nearly a year in 2013 but resigned that post after being charged with, and ultimately admitting guilt to, embezzling state money related to more than $40,000 in state individual income tax owed by employees at her husband’s medical practice, where she also worked.*
