An opinion about Century Stink (that we so lovingly call them)

I wanted to give my opinion about Century Stink (that we so lovingly call them)

we first moved to Chatham county almost 8yrs ago and had an aircard in the window for over a year and was told that DSL was coming soon.

we live 8miles west of town, so kind of out in the sticks.

As our neighborhood grew and more neighbors got frustrated with the lack of service, my next door neighbor really got the ball rolling! she was the squeaky wheel with Century Stink but they kept lying to her/us.

First they told us that they were getting Obama money, then later that they DID get that money but chose NOT to help us. Then they said to get a petition going with so many signatures, and she got that- that didn’t help either.

Then she found out that if you are within 2 miles of a school, who are required by law to have fast internet, that we can piggy back that and the edge of our neighborhood was just that- 2 miles away….. but that didn’t work much for them either.

Then she heard about a legislative meeting in Raleigh, that didn’t 100% pertain to us, but was more about Century Stink NOT wanting small towns to provide internet/dsl/fiber optics for their residents.

Once Century Stink found out that we were going to show up to this meeting and voice our opinion they PROMISED that we’d get DSL soon, but couldn’t provide a date.

So we were maybe 8-10 people who showed up and we also got to give some “speeches”

My neighbor had at that time a high school daughter who needed internet to do her homework and felt it would be discriminating if she got a lower grade just because of that or if mom had to take her to the library or McDonald’s every day just to do homework.

Another neighbor has an online business but has a really hard time doing it with the show internet (air card or satellite) and I used to work from home as well, but couldn’t do that here.

ALSO part of my speech, was HOW come the US is the most powerful country in the world and just because you live 8 miles away from a town you can’t get internet? even in North Korea they have fiber optics in the whole country!

After we said our peace and upset some of the BIG guys at Century Stink, we left and within a few months we got internet, though it kept getting delayed and there were also installation problems and problems with the routers etc.

The internet is fine for the most part, but after a storm, we have to reset the routers and I’ve had century stink guys out here more than a few times.

I still is tough that they are our only choice, so we have to do what they say and pay what they want for their services. And I feel bad for friends who are about 1 mile from me who don’t have internet and can’t get it still.

So I guess I’ll just say to keep being that squeaky wheel!
