I guess I should be ashamed for admitting it, but I have had some plants, still in the pots, for probably 25 or more years. I never meant for it to be that way. Many were either gifts, reduced at store, cuttings, seedling or bird planted. My gardening heart is bigger than my energy level. But in many cases, if I had not taken them, stepped in and grabbed, dug or saved from someone’s compost heap, they would not be alive at all. Mixed emotions on my part.

But there is a flip side. I sometimes have an “escape the pot” week long festival. I round up a goodly portion of those that really need planting and try and fit them into my garden scheme. 99 per cent make and reward me with additional beauty in the landscape. And sometimes, I am totally shocked at what emerges from what I thought was a shrub, turns out to be a tree and what I thought was a narcissus turns out to be garlic chives.

And then I find that I have stacks of empty pots, stacks of damaged pots and a lot of left over miscellaneous dirt that needs to be broadcast hither and yon, on the premise that there just might be a random seed, bulb-let or sprouting root that will somehow find a new home, somewhere in my garden and that is a good thing . . .
