Subject: The Biggest Southern Magnolia in Chatham County?

A big thank you to those who have nominated Southern Magnolia trees for the Big Southern Magnolia search, sponsored by Grand Trees of Chatham. So far, we have assessed six magnolias with the largest being at the United Methodist Church in Pittsboro. The dimensions on that tree are: Height 60 feet; circumference 142 inches; average crown spread 61′ for a total of 217 points (67% of the State Champion). The State Champion is in Martin County, has a height of 59′ a circumference of 246″, average crown spread of 67′ and total points of 322. That’s a circumference!

Where in Chatham is one that big?

If you think you know of one bigger than the one at the Methodist Church, send an email to < >

The search continues through February. We already have a few more to assess and would be delighted to hear about others to add to the list.
