Unguaranteed and unglamorous: The life of an NFL free agent

Tobais Palmer waits in the parking lot of his mother’s apartment complex. The season may be over, but he still has his work cut out. While more established players might blow thousands of dollars on gold-plated cleats or customized party buses, life in the NFL isn’t so glamorous for most. Many players like Palmer are just looking for a way to break into an unsympathetic business and provide for their families.

Palmer stays with his mom in Apex, N.C., during the offseason because he hasn’t been on a single team long enough during his two seasons in the NFL to lay down permanent roots elsewhere. An undrafted wide receiver out of N.C. State, he is already well-traveled after spending time with the Jaguars, Chargers, Saints and, most recently, the Bills. He has yet to see meaningful game action. He has spent most of his time at training camps and on practice squads.
