Fall is the best time to plant trees and shrubs in the south. To help local residents select the right trees and shrubs for their landscapes and plant them successfully, Chatham County Cooperative Extension is offering a free class on November 4th from 6:30 to 8:00 pm and again on November 5th from 10:00 to 11:30 am, titled “Fall Is For Planting”. Both sessions will be offered in the auditorium of the Chatham County Extension Center, located at 65 East Chatham St. in Pittsboro.

According to Chatham Extension horticulture agent Charlotte Glen, “the cooler air and soil temperatures of fall allow trees and shrubs to establish strong root systems before the heat of summer. As a result, fall planted trees and shrubs are typically more successful than those planted in spring, and are more drought resilient.” This is the reason November has been declared Arbor Month in Chatham County.

During the class participants will learn how to prepare their soil for planting, proper planting technique, how to care for newly planted trees and shrubs, and how to select varieties that will thrive in local growing conditions. The class is offered at no charge for residents who register by November 3rd. To register online, visit http://go.ncsu.edu/fallplanting, or call the Chatham Extension center at 919-542-8202.
