I have CenturyLink for 10Mb/s DSL. It was the first and is still the only option available on my corner of Bear Creek. There IS the option for Satellite, but I don’t even consider satellite internet due to speed issues and data usage caps and so forth. Internet is a requirement for my job and there are some months where I pull down enough data that I would hit the usage cap within the first few hours of a new cycle. That isn’t always an issue, but there are some projects I work on that do require a lot of data transfer.
The service itself has been great. I *GENERALLY* get right at 10Mb/s down all the time, day or night, sometimes it slows down. The network itself has been fairly solid, in the 5 years I’ve had the service it’s been out only a handful of times, and only 2 or 3 of those have been because of a service outage, more often it’s due to storm damage taking the lines down.
The very few times I’ve had to call tech support has been a breeze, however, I will caveat that with “I am a very technical person and generally know as much about this stuff as at least the average Level 1 tech” so when I call them, I usually know already what the problem is or have enough data to share that they can easily determine the cause.
Price wise, they’re OK, not bad, not the best, but given that where I live they are the only game in town, they could be a lot worse than they are. My only gripe now is that they offer 40Mb/s in more metro areas and I wish they’d roll that out further, but that’s a 1st World Problem. What I have works, works well, and lets me enjoy a job that allows me to work from home 75% of the time and travel the other 25%.
