Virginia Penley’s point about the County Commissioners meeting less and should be paid less than their predecessors is a good one. In fact the current commissioners not only agree with this statement they have already implemented this as policy. Prior to this board taking over, the 5 democrat commissioners were paid for each work session as a special meeting and were paid extra. The current conservative led board felt that work sessions should not count as a separate meeting from the night session and now considered the work session and the night session as one meeting. This policy change resulted in a reduction of commissioner’s compensation (Virginia’s paycut). As a comparison, the democrat board was paid $16,125 for special meetings in 2010. In 2014 the mixed republican/democrat board was paid $3,128 for special meetings. The total expense for the 2014 board v the 2010 board, when you look at pay, mileage, and technology was reduced by approximately $9000.

The reduced meeting time resulted in dramatic reduction in staff time.Saving thousands $$ more. This freed up the county manager to be more flexible with his staffing and allowed the BOC to forgo replacing a recently vacated assistant county clerk position. This saves the county taxpayers $47k.

If this board flips the only people that will be taking a pay cut in 2015 will be the Chatham County taxpayers.

Search for your property. Click on the Tax Bill tab. Look at you tax history years by year. You’ll see that your county taxes remained constant for the last 3 years. Can you say that for the years prior to 2011 when the liberals were in control?
