Subject: Deer that had something on her head

All, I am very sad to report that a Pittsboro neighbor found said deer in his yard this morning. He was able to approach and she was still alive. He removed the plastic slushy cup (plastic dome on top with hole in it) from her head and she died shortly after. She was brought to Carolina Tiger. She has a significant indentation on her face where this cup had dug in which is probably why she couldn’t get it off. She was just skin and bones, poor little thing. Given her state, I suspect the two babies didn’t make it.

I am sorry to be the bearer of such news but so many people wanted to know what happened to her. We called the NC Wildlife Resources Commission to advise them as well.

Please, no grumpy emails about the damage deer do to cars and crops. This was still a very sad way for her to have died. And while she might have raided this cup from someone’s garbage, she more likely just found it out somewhere. On Hanks Chapel we see trash thrown from cars all the time. Please, please, please, dispose of your trash appropriately. I don’t want to think that someone’s laziness/carelessness caused three deer their lives in such a terrible way.

  1. Thank you for your post. My heart aches for her and the babies.

The battle against “trash” on the roads, in the woods, and in our lakes is never ending. It is not just about educating the public; it is about careless, lazy, people.
