Because WRAL and the News and Obscurer continue to cover a group of a few hundred gimmie voters on Moron Mondays, don’t believe the hype that republicans are unpopular statewide. According to the ultra-rightwing news organization NBC, North Carolina ranks as the fifth best state in the country for Business (http://www.cnbc.com/id/101769842). Unemployment is down, things are looking up and it ain’t because of Bev. But locally what have the conservative commissioners brought the county?

1.  I see a new courthouse. How much did your taxes go up to pay for it? Answer. ZERO

2.  Ended funding the magic empty bus to Chapel Hill

3.  They cut fat by ending the Obesity director position.

4.  Ended all talk of a Land Transfer Tax

5.  Approved a new Walmart on the Orange County line. Yeah we’re snagging orange county tax dollars to pay for a new teacher bonus incentive program.

6.  While I’m telling you about what we’ve pilfered from Orange County, let’s not forget the work the conservative commissioners did to bring Strata Solar to Chatham County. ( http://www.stratasolar.com/2014/01/03/county-officials-excited-to-have-strata-solar-in-chatham-chatham-journal/ )

7.  Transparency. The republicans brought video streaming of meetings. This actually saved their bacon…(We can now say and eat bacon because there is no obesity czar) When a lie was being spread by Brian Bock’s upcoming democrat opponent, The Faux Quoter, people could easily watch the video and see the lie for themselves.

8.  It’s a little early to give them credit because nothing has been built, but they’ve planted the seed to bring an auto manufacturer to Western Chatham. http://www.chathamedc.org/buildings-sites/chatham-randolph-megasite Wasn’t there a quote several years ago about democrats no longer needing western Chatham to get elected?

9.  They stopped the construction of a mega landfill in the center of the county.

10.  They put a strategic land use plan that will guide development and to bring Chatham jobs while still protecting farms and preserving the rural character of the county.

11.  The conservative commissioners have streamlined processes and have been actively recruiting businesses. Capital investment is up in the county..

What have the conservative commissioners done for the schools? Because they were able to cut some fat out the budget and were able to bring in new businesses that pay taxes…they increased the tax base, they were able to increase the local supplement for teacher pay last year, even though the school board did not request it. They were also able to fund career workforce training at the high schools.

So what would have happened if the conservative commissioners were not elected in 2010 and were not in position to make the hard choices? I believe under a democrat controlled BOC we would have seen at least 2% property tax increases per year. What is a 2% tax increase per year for your family? For my family it is a long weekend trip to the beach vs a staycation.
