Subject: Voting Information for May 6 Primary
Last year, the NC General Assembly made a number of changes to North Carolina elections law. Voters will notice some of these changes during the current primary season.
The early voting period has been shortened by one week. It starts April 24 and ends at 1 pm on May 3. You may no longer register to vote during early voting. To vote in the May 6 primary you must register to vote by April 11. To maintain the same number of early voting hours as required by the new law, the Chatham County Board of Elections will open an additional early voting site in Goldston, as well as offering early voting at sites in Siler City, North Chatham, and the BOE office in Pittsboro. The sites will be open from 8 am to 8 pm on weekdays, from 8 am to 5 pm on Saturday, April 26 (at Pittsboro until 6 pm) and from 8 am to 1 pm on Saturday, May 3. The new site in North Chatham is located at Cole Park Plaza.
You may no longer send in a handwritten request for a mail-in absentee ballot. Instead, you must use the official state absentee ballot request form. It is available on the state or Chatham County Board of Elections website..
On Election Day, you must vote in your proper precinct. Any provisional ballot cast outside of a voter’s correct precinct will not be counted.
Voters will not be required to show a photo ID in order to vote in this year’s primary or general elections. Precinct officials will be providing information about the 2016 photo ID requirement and will be asking voters to sign a form if they do not believe they have acceptable ID. These voters will be given instructions on how they can obtain a no-fee photo ID from the North Carolina DMV.
