Volunteers Needed for Clean Jordan Lake’s March 15 Cleanup
On Saturday, March 15, Clean Jordan Lake volunteers will participate for the fifth year in the Haw River Assembly’s annual Clean-Up-A-Thon. Fran DiGiano, president of Clean Jordan Lake, said “while other groups remove trash along the Haw River from Greensboro to Bynum, our volunteers are assigned to stretches of the Haw River Arm of the lake.”
Boating, kayaking and walking volunteers will meet at the Robeson Creek Boat Ramps of the Jordan Lake State Recreation Area to receive their assignments. Boaters will ferry some of the walking volunteers to a shoreline section just north of Stinking Creek. Other walkers will drive a short distance to a logging road to access the Stinking Creek shoreline.
Boaters will ferry trash bags back to the boat ramps for off- loading to a dumpster provided by Chatham County Solid Waste & Recycling. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will donate staff and boat support.
DiGiano noted, “We will again have a Trash Treasure Hunt with donated store merchandise for prizes. There’s just no shortage of weird stuff. Most folks living upstream in the 1,400-square-mile watershed of the Haw River don’t realize their connection to Jordan Lake. Everything thrown or unintentionally left on the land is flushed into streams and eventually will end up at the lake.”
Volunteers meet at 9 am for sign-in and pick up of bags, gloves and snacks. The event ends at 1 pm.
Due to potential hazards, children under the age of 11 may not participate and those between 11 and 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
DiGiano added “We expect over 100 volunteers and this will bring the total to 3,000 volunteers since we began in 2009. I’ve recorded 90 cleanup events with 8,500 bags of trash (that’s about 85 tons) and 3,400 tires being removed from 15 miles of shoreline. Sadly, many of the same sections of shoreline have been cleaned several times because trash just keeps coming down the Haw River.“
