Have you thought of using a Magic jack? We bought ours from Best Buy. I would caution you to make sure you pay a little extra to pick out your own number when you set it up. We didn’t the first time and had many annoyance calls. Additionally, we sometimes have a little trouble hearing it, but found putting the speaker button on solves this issue.
For us, our family mostly calls us on the cell phones.
As far as the cost of high speed internet, yes, they try to charge you more. We are currently paying $34.95 per month to Time Warner for Road Runner. The only way I can get this deal is to call them back when they drop it (must ask for the customer retention department) to let them know that if they don’t put it back on a reasonable amount, you will have to switch). This only occurs once every six months to a year.
As we have not yet moved to Chatham (we are building), I’m not sure if Road Runner is an option, but similar tactics might work with Centurylink and/or whatever their competition is.
