Subject: DOT changing RT 64 to Interstate

I recently learned that the NC DOT has a long-term plan for altering the entire length of Routes 64 and 49. Eventually, they want to create an alternate to I 40/85, running from Raleigh to Charlotte. The reconstruction includes limited access, major clover-leaf interchanges, by-passes around Siler City and Asheboro, et al. Anything in its path would be affected, including farms, businesses and residences.

As part of this overall plan, the DOT has recently proposed the first phase which would run from Raleigh to the Pittsboro by-pass. Within this section of Chatham, they are proposing to start with a Superstreet with limited access. Later on, it would become the first section of the alternate I 40/85.

Details about the DOT’s plans for Chatham County can be found on the web site of Chatham Citizens for Effective Communities at www.chathamcitizens.org . The time for public comment directly to DOT has passed, but comments can still be made to the Board of Commissioners and will be passed on to DOT via
