Chainsaw tales

Dear Pam,
Ahh… be careful of making such judgments regarding the trouble people can get themselves into with a chainsaw.
First of all, I think the “it” Al Cooke was referring to was not the chainsaw itself, but the whip-like action of a limb under tension when that tension is suddenly released by sawing it partway through. That limb could indeed “take off your ear,” or any other bits of you that get in its way. Or it could merely hit you square in the face and send your glasses flying 20 feet.
Outside wood-boilers

We got our outside wood-boiler, a HeatMor, from Southern Alamance Trailer in Snow Camp, 1 1/2 years ago.
Their number is: 336-376-6316. We have used them for 19 years for servicing our horse trailers, and trust them completely.
We love the steady heat it puts out. We have an older brick home with copper tube radiators in the baseboard. It came with an older oil furnace in the basement. We had switched to a HeatPump in 1995 for the AC. but kept the radiators & old furnace.

Outdoor furnace

We had one for about 15 years. It takes a lot of work to keep it going. My husband did all the work. It really did help on utility bills. WHen he passed away I kept it going for about 2 years. You have to be sure to follow the maintenance of the unit to keep it working properly. Make sure you know the costs for replacing the blower and treatments for the water to keep the water jacket from deteriorating. If you have an ample supply of free wood it would be worth it.

Chain saw accidents

Al Cooke,
I don’t mean to take such a serious subject so lightly, but in dental practice I have yet to see just an ‘an ear cut off’ with a chain saw when in the area of the head. I am certain you meant to not get into too an undesirable description, but your comment did tickle me as to the absurdity.
Watch out for falling trees

I’ve just received the most recent warning from Chatham County offices
http://www.chathamnc.org/index.aspx?recordid=1635&page=19
about safety issues related to the predicted winter weather we’re all preparing for. Some good suggestions there and I commend it to your attention. One of the items mentioned is the potential for downed trees on power lines and blocking roads.
This is the worst possible situation for using a chainsaw. Many of us think we know how to use one. But when trees fall, there are many more safety issues to consider. First of course is whether a “hot” electric line is involved. None of us needs to go there.

Summary of propane prices

Date: Fri, 29 Jan 2010 11:24:37 -0500
From: Bill Prentice
Subject: Propane prices
Thanks to everyone who responded to my inquiry about propane prices. Here is a summary of what people told me. I have includes ONLY reports of “past week” deliveries, given the speed at which prices change. Also please note that I DID NOT validate these figures with the vendors… Simply reporting to you what was reported to me by
Chatlisters.
Jenkins $2.79
Blossman $2.79
Payne $2.849
Cooper $2.949
Also, one Chatlister reported that Cooper (perhaps others as well?) sells at a significant discount if you own your own tank. Again, unconfirmed by me.
