Four species of holly, both evergreen and deciduous, are native to Chatham County

Subject: holly berries

There are at least 4 species of holly, both evergreen and deciduous, that are native to Chatham County and others that do well here, especially several Chinese varieties and some hybrids.  Despite their extensive use as a foundation plant, Japanese hollies (black berries) are not outstanding selections for heavy wet soils and often are short-lived here due to root rots.  The native and underused inkberry holly is often a better choice.  All hollies are dioecious, meaning that male and female flowers occur on separate plants.  In many cases the female plant will not bear fruit unless there is a male that blooms at the same time and there are insects that visit both plants.  In some cases the female is parthenocarpic meaning it can develop seedless fruit without pollination.  And the males never bear fruits.

Merry Christmas Chathamites!

John:     Some folks folks have asked us about John and why he is still walking………….John did not have his moped stolen again as some rumors claim.  John still has his moped………..unfortunately, John had trouble unlocking the scooter lock…rather then asking for help, John broke the “unlock” piece of equipment……..he tried to repair it himself and ended up taking the bike apart…..a few days ago we learned of this and we are now in the process of “helping” John fix his scooter and teach him how to use it for the future…………John has Christmas for his son and house full of groceries now thanks to you all…….Pray his scooter can be repaired and get him off his feet soon…..

At the recent Carolina Farm Stewardship Association’s annual Sustainable Agriculture Conference held Dec. 4-6 in Black Mountain, Chatham County farmer Doug Jones of Piedmont Biofarm was named Farmer of the Year from nominees submitted from both North and South Carolina!

Congratulations to Doug for this well-deserved award. I have worked with Doug for over eight years and have always been impressed with the quality of his produce and his generosity in sharing his knowledge and passion for agriculture with others.

Eleagnus, aka Russian olive or locally as hackberry

I gather from Chatlist 3603 that I probably did not receive the preceding edition.  In fact my mailbox suggests 2 issues missing and they’re not in the junk file either.  This is an occasional occurrence, and Gene, I know you deal with it in a variety of contexts.  I mention in not to complain by just FYA.  It probably has to do with filters on my end.

Berries or no berries, that is the question

Subject: berries or no berries, that is the question

Yep!  Us males are transient, no doubt.

American holly (Ilex opaca) pollinates in early spring when rain and freezing weather can cease production.  The pollen has poor insect dispersal.  Other hollies, cultivars (cultivated varieties), pollinate later and have more predictable yield.  The males are around, but identifying them may take a year or more to see that they have no berries when the females do.  That is unless you can sex the flower, er…, that is tell the difference between male and female flowers.  It is said that a male may service the females within a quarter mile.

Getting rid of elaegnus

From: Matthew Arnsberger
Subject: re: getting rid of elaegnus?

Two kinds of Eleagnus are a problem in the Southeast – Eleagnus pungens ( Silverberry, is an evergreen, thorny eleagnus) and Eleagnus umbellata (Autumn Olive, is a deciduous, less thorny eleagnus). They are quite prevalent in the woods this time of the year when many native plants have dropped their leaves.

Five Element Acupuncture in Pittsboro.

Two years have passed since I opened my acupuncture practice in Pittsboro at the Chatham Wellness Center.  I introduced myself on this wonderful chatlist and then was happy to see some of my patients offer their testimonials on my behalf here as well.  My name is Sara Ruth Kane, and I relocated here from Miami, Florida, where I was dean of students, clinical supervisor and faculty member at the Academy for Five Element Acupuncture.  When my school decided to relocate to Gainesville, I decided the time had come to fulfill a long-held wish to live near my sister, who has lived in Moncure for several years now.
