BOE changes long time meeting policy

Subject: BOE changes long time meeting policy

Does anyone know why the Board of Education has decided to stop having regular meetings at the individual schools?  Next year all regular meetings will be held at SAGE.  Really sorry to see this happen.  One more buffer between the system and it’s users.  The BOE’s annual meetings at the schools were a great way to show accomplishments and air concerns. Folks would come who may have never thought to attend a BOE meeting. I do not understand the motivation behind this change, unless it is financial.

There’s often a lot of negative talk about our local surroundings, but today I’d like to discuss some “good things” that may get overlooked with all of the daily bickering & chatter.

I’ve had the opportunity of working with several local businesses during my time at the library. I have to say that I’m most impressed with the businesses in this community and their support for our local establishments and organizations.

Those $%! Carpenter Bees and Woodpeckers

July 17th, 2009 · No Comments

Subject: Those $%! Bees and Woodpeckers

For those of you who had their houses punched up by carpenter bees, it’s now getting worse as woodpeckers go after the larva (?) in the holes.

I believe I found a solution to that problem at least, and it’s cheap – float some mylar balloons near the areas targeted by woodpeckers. I’m using some with cartoon characters with large eyes on one side, reflective silver on the other, and have driven woodpeckers away in two places. The movement, the ‘eyes’, and the reflection seem to do the trick. Pick up balloons at the dollar store, or like me get a disposable helium tank (about $30) and some cheap balloons at Party City. Oh yeah, my house also looks so darned festive now!

Level of technology at School Board meetings

Subject: RE: Chatham Chatlist #3439 About BOE Meetings and schools…

Jeff,
I’m pretty sure that the level of technology at a K-4 or K-8 school is different than at a high school, and I think that is appropriate. I don’t know if all of the elementary or K-8 schools have wireless (like the central office and I believe the high schools do) because those students usually don’t have laptops like high school students do (or will next year with the 1 to 1 laptop initiatve at the high schools.)

Reports of rabid fox should always be taken seriously

Re:  reports of a rabid fox in Fearrington

Such reports must always be taken seriously.  It’s also reasonable to question the reliability of the report.  There are likely non-rabid foxes also.  And when they are raising young, the need to feed may lead to behavior beyond the “normal.”  But we should also assume that rabies is a possibility and protect ourselves.

Perhaps the BOE should continue having their meetings at these very inconvenient locations until they figure out how to ensure that all the schools can support what is, in today’s world, very basic technology.

Instead of mace, carry hornet stray

Instead of mace, carry hornet stray.  If you get the face, it’s about the same effect.  The spray stream is much longer, makes a louder noise, and the spray is more visible… just more scary all around ;*).
