I’m not too sure you are right in this, Gene, since at least two posters on this chatlist digest have admitted being influenced by the hoax posting.

Unfortunately, I need to weigh in and disagree that we are all sophisticated enough to tease truth from fiction when an undeclared hoax post makes the listand it is NOT April Fools Day.
Many people choose to skim the chatlist most of the time rather than skip it. I do miss some days – but most get a quick look.
I my case, “skim” means that I may not read closely enough to catch subtleties and I don’t read every post. So I especially appreciate topic lines that clearly describe the message contents.

Subject: Opposition to Liquor By The Drink
In response to “Mr.” Voller’s not-so-subtle attack on the opposition to bringing Liquor by the drink to Chatham County, shame on you! It is within our rights as citizens of the United States of America to free speech, at least the last time I read the Constitution it was. Just as the “vote yes” group has been able to put their signs up, conduct their support marches, and spread blatant untruths concerning the “generation of revenue”. What I believe is appalling, is the fact that the “yes” group is so threatened by the “no” group that they have actually stooped so low as to steal the “no” signs. Please, children, let’s get out of the sandbox and act like adults for once.

Subject: Bees and Orchards
I was surprised by the number of blooms that did not set fruit this year in my orchard. It looked like many other fruit trees I have seen also have not set well this year. Has any one else noticed this? I wondered if that late cold snap was the problem.
I have not noticed many bees this year in my orchard or on other flowers. I’m ready to take the plunge and install a hive or two. Is there a local source of beehives? Is anyone tired of their bees and want to relocate them? Any advice would be appreciated.

Subject: Only a JOKE?! Is the Chatlist becoming the Onion?
Those who posted the misinformation about the “Gentlemen’s Club” and then came back a few days later saying “it was only a joke” remind me of a young school child who has committed some misdeed trying to squirm out from under their guilt saying, “I was only kidding.”

Maybe I should have sent this post from Hugh Moore Liss, given how many people on the Chat List took seriously a post from Anna Lyst. Among the most disturbing and humorless responses I read something reminiscent of the old segregationist days in Chatham that I remember well. The sentence was: “As responsible citizens, we don?t have to allow anything to happen to our county that we don?t like.”
That sounds like something the county’s Ku Klux Klanners used to say about hippies (meaning anyone with long hair) moving in and black people running for office and integrating the schools.
