Please consider that wetlands serve essential ecosystem functions, and are the most productive ecosystems in the world.  Read more about their functions and values at these websites:

There are many wetlands in Chatham, including in the area in which this wetland occurs – the soils do not drain well, and streams and seeps are common.  There is an upland wetland near the so-called Death Swamp that is considered a Significant Natural Heritage Area by the NC Natural Heritage Program due to it’s importance for salamander habitat.

Subject: Women Volunteers to Build Houses for Chatham Habitat. Join us!

Volunteer in honor of your mother for Mother’s day!

In the days leading up to Mother’s Day, 175 construction crews of women
volunteers across the country will be pounding nails and raising walls at
Habitat for Humanity construction sites in recognition of National Women
Build Week, May 2 – 10. In Pittsboro, local women volunteers will be donning
tool aprons to help build homes for five low-income families from May 5 to
May 9. Women volunteers are needed Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday
between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. No construction experience is

May 4, 2009: On-farm Good Agricultural Practices Audit

The Chatham County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension will offer an interactive On-farm Good Agricultural Practices Audit as part of its Enhancing Sustainability Series on Monday, May 4, from 5:30-7:30 pm at the Student Farm at Central Carolina Community College (CCCC) in Pittsboro. This mock audit complements the April 21 workshop on Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) and will help direct market growers identify the critical points of concern for produce safety: compost/manure management, water resources and irrigation, land history and topography, proximity to livestock (pastured hens are on site), postharvest handling and storage, and employee hygiene. The goal is to get growers thinking about where they can best focus their efforts to reduce the risk of contamination.
