My figs are nearly as big as pears

From: Kira Dirlik
Subject: Figs

Just in case the person asking about the figs feels intimidated, I could add my two cents.  I had a fig tree (small figs… celeste?) when I lived in Durham.  It was already there when I came in 1971 and was still thriving when I moved to Chatham in 1995.  I never did anything to it, but found that its aggressive roots invaded my veggie garden every year which was adjacent to it.  Very hard to til the garden and get them all out… tangled mass of small top roots.

Problem with the way the Salvation Army handles their donations

From: Billy Thornton
Subject: Salvation Army donations

I have been away and just returned to catch up on around 15 chatlist postings. I have a problem with the way the Salvation Army handles their donations.

I have a friend that the school sent in their names to the SA with all the information on the two girls and the parents. The mother received a card telling her to pick up their donated gifts which was from Mt. Olive Baptist Church this morning. When she arrived the donated items were not there and she was told that they had not arrived.

Pecan processing

Here’s what I learned about places that process in-shell pecans:

http://www.ncpecans.org/sources.htm

Some pecan processers don’t answer email.  It is their busy season.

You possibly shouldn’t make any processing decisions based on  who does or does not list shelling on that site; apparently, the Goldsboro processers DO shell for the public at a rate of 35/50/85 cents per pound in-shell nuts, cracked, blown and cleaned, respectively.  Other processers appear to be in the same range; some give a price break at the 500# level.

Growing Figs

Subject: Growing Figs

One of my mentors once suggested that growing any kind of fruit successfully is not a hobby; it’s a lifestyle.  That’s the first thought that comes to mind when anyone is busy and just wants to grow some fruit.

We are nearly as far north as we can successfully grow figs.  So the more attention you pay to details, the more successful you are likely to be.  There’s a pretty good summary of how to do it put together by one of my colleagues in Mecklenburg County: http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/mecklenburg/depts/hort/john/figs/

I sit here and put two and two together when I can and Its not what I do to help its what the Angels have done this year that matters. I know what its like to have nothing and when you have nothing with no hope its a depressing place to be with kids at Christmas.

My friend Mark Estil passed away

February 17th, 2009 · No Comments

From: Cathy Holt
Subject: Mark Estil

My friend Mark Estil passed away yesterday. After spending the afternoon crying, I tried to think of what I could do in his honor. We would not have the yoga studio that we have if it wasn’t for Mark. Mark loved yoga and didn’t want to have to go anywhere to attend a class, so before he and his brother Lyle built a building for their computer business they called and asked if I would like to have a yoga studio there. That has turned into a very fortunate moment for so many in this community. We have had our lovely space because of the Estil brothers.

Chatham County real estate market report

February 17th, 2009 · No Comments

From: Lynn Hayes
Subject: Real estate market report

Greetings Chathamohicans!

I’ve prepared a report on the real estate market in the Chatham/Orange/Durham area for my clients and posted it on my website.

Here is the general info about the Triangle from the report:

I¢m writing this report the day following a broadcast on 60 Minutes about the second wave of foreclosures about to hit.  There is no doubt that some segments of the national housing market are in crisis, and that has trickled down to the Triangle.  Without the wave of buyers from out of town, there are no buyers for thousands of new homes that are proposed or under construction.
