2008 has been a horrible year for the Cooper family, but we learned some very valuable lessons. I want to share one of those lessons with the chatlisters.

Behind every piece of art at the Chatham Studio Tour there is an artist’s story. Roger Person will never forget the day in 1990, when he was standing on a ladder cutting a limb from a large tree. The branch released, knocking him from the ladder resulting in a crippling spinal cord injury. In that instant, this physically active engineer and adventurer was fated to life in a wheel chair. Here are the latest North Carolina state high school football playoff brackets. The first round of games is scheduled for Friday, November 14. East Guilford (7-3) will play at Northwood in Pittsboro. West Columbus (5-5) will play at Jordan-Matthews in Siler City. Chatham Central (2-8) will play at Mount Airy (10-0).

Angie Brady-Andrew, Principal of Siler City Elementary School, has been named the 2008-2009 Chatham County Principal of the Year. She will advance to the regional level of competition.

Farmers who sell meat, poultry, and eggs in North Carolina must comply with state and federal laws designed to ensure that meat and poultry products sent into commerce are wholesome, unadulterated, and properly labeled. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (NCDA&CS) enforces these laws.

"Citizens’ College – How Government Works" is coming to Jordan Matthews High School as a voluntary “after school program” beginning on Thursday, October 29.

I strongly support Gene Galin in the Board of Education race. This is a non-partisan race. Plus quite frankly I vote for those who I believe will have the best impact.

Recently there was a post to the Chatlist asking about who and what the Chatham County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension is. Due to a full schedule is has taken awhile to get a response back to the Chatlist, but this is the story of who and what we are.

<em>Our house along the Haw River is surrounded by large Beech trees. They seem to be diseased with a fungus and/or insect parasite. Both yellowish and black “blobs” have appeared on the lower branches, and there are some branches that have developed a whitish infestation-looking coating.</em>
