Subject: Board of Education Meeting Summary – Sept. 8, 2008
The Chatham County Board of Education met at the central office on Monday, September 8.
Good News
Dr. Robin McCoy, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, shared data from the 2008 SAT results. (See the district’s online press release from 8/25/08 for details.)
Superintendent Robert Logan gave the Board an update on student membership through today, the tenth day of the school year. The district currently has 7731 students in kindergarten through grade twelve, 100 less students than projected. Logan noted that area charter school enrollment has increased which may account for the difference in students enrolled
versus projected.

Fire Ants
People seem to have begun noticing fire ant mounds. I’m aware of two reasons why you may be seeing new mounds now and may continue to see new mounds for a while:
1) Fire ant queens mate in the air during spring and land somewhere to start a new mound. It takes about 6 months for the queen to build up sufficient numbers of workers for that mound to be easily visible. So new fire ant mounds are likely to show up from late summer to late fall.
2) And ants in general tend to clean out their nests after a heavy rain. So we notice a lot of mounds (all ants, not just fire ants) just because there is fresh soil at the surface.

Subject: Help! New York Times!
I traisped to kingdom come and back today trying to find Wednesday’s New York Times.
My daughter is in Kenya (where they danced in the streets and declared today a national holiday). Among other things, she works with high school students who ask her everyday about Obama. She’s gajillion miles from anywhere, at the base of Kilimanjaro, far from any newspapers. I really really really wanted to send her the front and elections sections of today’s (Wednesday) New York Times — I think it would be quite treasured in that tiny school. I can’t find one anywhere.

Subject: Wire Crates needed to help homeless cats
The Goathouse Refuge is in need of large wire/metal dog crates to temporarily house homeless cats. They need to be a minimum of 42 inches. We also need the plastic cat carriers for transportation.
If you have a crate to donate we would be happy to issue a tax receipt for it and you will be helping us save some feline lives.
We are 5 miles north of Pittsboro off Rt 87 – follow the signs to The Goathouse Gallery which is on Alton Alston Road.

Subject: November Menu
Hi Everyone,
This month I am adding Pumpkin and Sage Ravioli with Sage Butter to my menu. I roasted the pumpkins this morning and the raviolis look beautiful. I also started making my two soups: Red Soup (or chicken soup if you didn’t grow up in my family) and Pasta Fasule – panchetta, beans, carrots, celery, tomatoes, pasta…very hearty.

Subject: best vet in town
I have used several vets since arriving in 1992 and my parents also for 26 years, and we agree that Vet Hope Crossing is by far the best we have found in the area.
Located south of Pittsboro and just north of Fearrington Village, they are not fancy (who wants to pay for a million dollar building) and they aren’t overstaffed (who wants to pay for unnecessary employees). You get David and Amy’s attention, homespun friendly attitude and extraordinary knowledge.

Subject: THANKS and emergency info for future reference
THANKS!!!! For the food donated to the Senior Center. Several up you in Chatlist-land stepped up and made generous donations. We appreciate your support!
For those of you who are focused on what to do in weather-related emergencies, both Council on Aging Senior Centers are emergency shelters. We operate in cooperation with the Emergency Operations Center, and will provide shelter primarily for high-risk and special (health) needs people and secondarily for the general population. If you have emergency needs during weather-related disasters, please call 911. Our shelters will open when the EOC determines that they are the best options for the community.
