Leading up to the primary election in the spring, my son, who is finally old enough to vote in a presidential election, came home from college for a weekend visit. He proudly planted an Obama yard sign in front of our house, and went back to school. A few days later the sign mysteriously disappeared. We were disappointed, but we let it go. On Primary Election Day in May, my son drove home from Greensboro just so he could cast his vote for Barack Obama.

Subject: hurricane preparedness for horticultural producers
With some possible severe weather coming our way this weekend, I thought it would be a good idea to provide some food for thought on how to best prepare small farms. I was not able to find any existing resources that related specifically to diversified farms so I put together a web page that included input from several of our experienced farmers.
Please visit Cooperative Extension’s Growing Small Farm website at http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/chatham/ag/SustAg/hurricanes.html to view this document.

Citizens’ College – How Government Works is coming to Jordan Matthews High School as a voluntary “after school program” beginning on Thursday, October 29.
Citizens’ College began in 2006 as an opportunity for Chathamites to learn firsthand about county and town governments from the people who actually run these departments. The Jordan Matthews program will continue this format while focusing on local Siler City government. As an outcome of the seven weeks of interactive learning, students will be better informed on the inner working of municipal government, understand where and how dollars are spent and discover how to participate more fully as young citizens.

As is the tradition here on the chatlist all LOCAL candidates for the Chatham Board of Commissioners and the Chatham School Board, plus the Soil and Water Board are invited to introduce themselves and let chatlisters know why we should vote for them.

Endorsement of Board of Education Candidates
By Gerald Totten, a Current Board of Education Member
As a sitting member of the Chatham County Board of Education I’ve been asked by many people who I endorsed and felt would be the most significant newly elected members of the Chatham County Board of Education for the next four years. The question should more properly have been worded “why” about my choices.

Pumpkins on Bynum’s Pedestrian Bridge Halloween Eve.
Soon it will be time for the pumpkins to be bought so that Jan Berger and crew can do their magic carving and then set the pumpkins on the Bynum bridge for all to come and admire over the waters of the Haw. Jan would like to ask….if anyone knows where pumpkins can be purchased for $3 or less, please call him. This is a volunteer Chatham community event. He’s hoping to purchase around 60+ pumpkins for a low low cost.

I strongly support Gene Galin in the BOE race. This is a non-partisan race. Plus quite frankly I vote for those who I believe will have the best impact.
Gene has the history in Chatham … no, I’m not talking longevity vs. his opponent … but a history that runs back to the Strategic Plan Development Committee and various other boards on which he served. Gene is connected and understands the links between education, community, economic development, and Chatham’s growth.

What is this, Yahoo Groups or something? For those who don’t understand my sarcasm, it’s very common for Yahoo Groups discussions to be infested by posts promoting other groups covering basically the same subject. It seems many people are more interested in building a group than discussing the subject at hand.

Hi Everyone,
I am very troubled by the O’Brian endorsements from the Chatham County Democratic Party, the Chatham Coalition, and the Chatham County Association of Education. I can not remember anything like this happening before. These actions make me feel as dirty as some of the push polls that occurred with Bunkey and Gary Phillips.

Subject: I am going with years of community involvement
The Chatham Coalition candidates for school board both seem like nice young men.
However both of them have been here for only 2 to 5 years and have not had much long-term community involvment. One day in the future they may make fine candidates.
This week I plan to go to the polls and vote for Gene Galin and Mia Munn for the Chatham School Board.
