Recently there was a post to the Chatlist asking about who and what the Chatham County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension is.  Due to a full schedule is has taken awhile to get a response back to the Chatlist, but this is the story of who and what we are.

We are the Chatham County Campus of North Carolina’s two land grant universities, North Carolina State University and North Carolina A&T State University.  We have County Center’s in all 100 of North Carolina’s counties plus the Cherokee Reservation.  This makes us the largest outreach arm of any university in North Carolina.

Subject: Begging for food for food pantry

A BIG thanks to the folks who donated food to the food pantry at the Pittsboro senior center!

Fortunately, you each brought several bags of food and we honestly appreciate the donations.

Unfortunately for seniors in need of food, there were only three of you.

So, I’m begging for food so others don’t have to. One can at a time, we need to restock this food pantry. I’ve forgotten how many people receive Gene’s Chatlist, but if only half of you contribute one can of meat or beans or fruit, we can feed a lot of people.

Diane, et al.,

Your description is consistent with a beech specimen that someone else brought to me recently.  I narrowed that one down to either “wooly beech leaf aphid” or “beech blight aphid.”  A standard reference from Cornell suggests of one of these aphids that “Beech trees in the United States seem capable of maintaining huge populations of this aphid year after year with little observable tree injury.”  They are just some more of those creatures with whom we share our world.

The search is on for a new 2009 Mardi Gras Queen! I nominate Andrea Young!

Andrea as you may remember is one of the founding members of The Abundance Foundation and has advanced it to a whole new level.  She will long be remembered for totally re-inventing the annual Pittsboro Christmas Parade and is credited with developing and bringing to fruitation the 2008 Mardi Gras. So, everybody vote for Andrea Young for Mardi Gras Queen 2009!

Subject: RDU parking

Our experience with FastPark and Relax parking at RDU was excellent until check out when we were denied the the discount because we failed to present the discount coupon along with the credit card and parking ticket.

We were a bit distracted and had handed in the coupon maybe 30 seconds after presenting the credit card and parking ticket. Unless the coupon is handed over with the coupon, we were told, the discount could not be honored.  This policy was confirmed by the supervisor. So we will go back to PreFlight.
