Subject: Shots fired at Chatham County deputies

PistolAbout 1:00 am on July 5, 2008, Chatham County Deputies responded to a disturbance at 739 Old US 1, Moncure. Deputies arrived to find about 60 people at the location. At least two individuals began fighting when deputies arrived. While Corporal Phillip Richard was trying to stop the two from fighting, an unknown subject held a gun above the crowd and shot in the direction of Deputy Richard. The crowd fled in all directions. A short time later, more shots were fired in the direction of the deputies from behind a crowd of people. In all 15 to 20 shots were fired at deputies. Deputies called for additional assistance from surrounding law enforcement agencies. Wake County Sheriff’s Office, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, and State Highway Patrol responded and assisted. No injuries were reported as a result of the shooting.

Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the shooting and is asking for your help. Anyone with information about the incident or knows the identity of the gunman is asked to call (919) 542-2911.

At the same incident, Roger Smith, 30, of 7550 Moncure Pittsboro Road, Moncure was arrested by Chatham County Deputies. Mr. Smith was charged with Drunk and Disruptive, Criminal Damage to Property, and Resist Delay or Obstruct an Officer. He was jailed under a $1,000.00 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in Pittsboro District Court on July 30.
