Subject: volunteering
Thank you Meg for the suggestion. I do, in fact, volunteer a great deal in the summer time and it does indeed help with the long summer. I find that my good works performed in the summer usually bear fruit in the fall (and then the long cold winter with sick children). Many of my past summer projects have evolved into successful summer programs for children. Certainly my past work with the thrift shop, while hot as the hinges of heck, gave me many hours of mindless bliss. I also recommend to all the joy of volunteering for those agencies which rely upon volunteers. We all have to live so we can’t give all our time but an hour here and there can build a house for a family, or provide support for a rider with balance issues, or give an elder the chance to talk, or teach a child to read (many, many, many hours for that one).

Subject: Park and Ride II
Thanks to Joy for a great idea to get UNC to let us all ride the buses from the parknride near Cole Park Plaza into Chapel Hill. Especially in the summer with students gone, the buses probably aren’t that full.
Does anyone have a suggestion about how to get this idea approved?

Subject: Shots fired at Chatham County deputies
About 1:00 am on July 5, 2008, Chatham County Deputies responded to a disturbance at 739 Old US 1, Moncure. Deputies arrived to find about 60 people at the location. At least two individuals began fighting when deputies arrived. While Corporal Phillip Richard was trying to stop the two from fighting, an unknown subject held a gun above the crowd and shot in the direction of Deputy Richard. The crowd fled in all directions. A short time later, more shots were fired in the direction of the deputies from behind a crowd of people. In all 15 to 20 shots were fired at deputies. Deputies called for additional assistance from surrounding law enforcement agencies. Wake County Sheriff’s Office, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, and State Highway Patrol responded and assisted. No injuries were reported as a result of the shooting.

Subject: Thanks so much for you comments regarding the mural
Carmen,
Thanks so much for you comments regarding the mural. We actually invited seniors and had hoped for their participation. On the next go round, we plan to have one less section of scaffolding to offer easier access for seniors and disabled individuals to join the youth in painting.
However, we did have many seniors join us multiple times as we painted to share in the discussions and engage with the student artists and established artists. It really was a community effort involving all ages.
