Regarding the fox in Fearrington Village.  I would suggest that you are observing normal predictable behavior of one of the many creatures with whom we share our world.

First, the legals…  In North Carolina, fox is a game animal meaning that it can be “taken” only during established hunting/trapping seasons, in the act of depredation, or by acquiring a depredation permit.  For permits call 707.0060.  Taking includes any action to pursue, trap, annoy, get rid of, etc.

In your specific situation, there is a good chance that there are young kits nearby and the adult is protecting them.  I’ve heard at least two observations of foxes with young in the past month.  The fox may also be more aggressive at this time not only in defending the young but exhibiting behavior such as hunting in the daytime.  Also be aware of the possibility of rabies.  Keep your pets up to date on shots and do not approach.  I would encourage people to reduce the incidence of confrontation by backing off, keeping the barking dogs away, and not turning your back.

The good news is that the foxes have not yet been displaced by coyotes who, being larger, pose a much more significant threat.  In addition to barking, small dogs, cats, calves, and lambs just disappear.
