The Pittsboro Mural Project Dedication Ceremony Planned

Mark your calendars.  The Mural Dedication Ceremony is scheduled for Pittsboro’s First Sunday, June 1st, with The Pittsboro Merchants Association.  It will feature Rootzie, from 1pm till 3:30. (www.myspace.com/therootzieband) There will be a break from 2 to 2:30 pm where Elaine Chiosso of the Haw River Assembly will speak, and then Mayor Randy Voller will dedicate the mural. We will also be raffling off a Clyde Jones Critter to support the project.

The Pittsboro Mural Project began last fall when Suzanne Robinson and Diane Swan envisioned a project of positive mentoring for middle school students through the arts.  They connected with Stacye Leanza, a local mural artist and it began. The theme became “Saving the Haw” river.

Suzanne Robinson works with the schools through the Unlimited Success Program, the preventative side of Partnership for Drugfree NC. Stacye, and assistant muralist Travis Cohn, began meeting with the students in January after school at Horton Middle School. Diane Swan, Erick Davis, George DeSocio, Linda Collura, Charity Alston, and other artists and muralists soon joined in.  The students came up with the basic idea for the mural; their ideas were joined together into the final sketch by Stacye Leanza. Now the students have each painted an animal on the mural themselves.

It is so much fun being out there and meeting people from the community who come by and love what is going on.  It is equally exciting to be working with so many talented kids and artists as we swap stories and paint.  We are in the home stretch.  We have gotten all the background finished with the help of many area students; Our Neighborhood School, Aulden Academy, Chatham New School, a local Girl Scout troop, and a community of local artists.  We are now finishing up detail.

The mural is being painted on the “Blair Hotel” owned by Elizabeth Anderson, just across from the General Store Café.  Support for the project is coming from the Abundance Foundation and Chatham Arts.

Tax deductible donations are dearly welcomed. Checks can be sent to:
