To the people of the Chatlist –

Begging your indulgence for a few remarks on the following centennials:

August 23 of this year marked 100 years since the unveiling of the Confederate memorial that stands over what’s now the Pittsboro traffic roundabout. One hundred years ago September 2, someone mysteriously defaced the statue with shoe polish.

Subject: Small Business Owners Beware

Interlopers are on the prowl in Chatham county. There is a publishing company from somewhere in Georgia, is calling small business’ to advertise with them in what they call “Southern Historical News”

It’s bad enough that local papers across the country are losing readers to the Internet, TV & News Radio now they have to fear interstate print competition.

Cahoon-Cotten

From: “Wallace Kaufman”
Subject: Cahoon-Cotten

Over the past 40 years observing Chatham politics I’ve heard and read volumes of hot and heavy debate, including many bitter personal assaults. That’s the nature of politics. What is exceedingly uncommon is the full admission of error, the full retraction, the complete apology unqualified by excuses, an honest reappraisal of the facts, and a sincere wish to atone and start again. Dan Cahoon engaged in a bitter and unfair personal attack, then quickly followed with all of the latter. It takes some courage and guts to eat that much crow so fast. I don’t recall any other example in Chatham politics (and few elsewhere) of how to restore civil debate.

Cotten, Bryan, Brooks and maybe Walker

Subject: Cotten, Bryan, Brooks and maybe Walker

I still don’t know Max Cotten and I don’t know anything except a name and a face for Mr. Brooks or Mr. Bryan. To those persons I send my respect and regard for tackling the daunting task of representing the people of Pittsboro.

I do take issue with your vote for rezoning. You voted yes to rezoning a place that does not need to be rezoned to be a productive resource for Pittsboro.

Why?

The Good Old Boys

From: Dan Cahoon
Subject: The Good Old Boys

As it turns out, I am a good old boy. A friend called me recently to discuss my post regarding Max Cotten and the recent vote on rezoning by the town council. He and talked about my feelings regarding Mr. Cotten. We both agreed that my words were unnecessarily harsh. He also let me know that I am, in fact, a good old boy.

Here is the evidence:

Subject: Chatham Links now offers preview snapshots

This past weekend I went ahead and added preview snapshots to the Chatham Links Directory at
http://www.chatham-county-nc.com/chathamlinks/

The new snapshots enhance links with visual previews of the destination site. For website users, it’s an enhanced way to
surf because links are no longer blind, but a source of information.

Now when you visit the site and you place your cursor over an active link you see a preview image of whatever site a
link points to.

Ants Marching In? Think poison free!

From: “Eric, Sarah & Jonah Shook”
Subject: Ants Marching In? Think poison free!

As the ground moisture lessens and the heat wave grows; ant colonies are searching for water and food in more places.

Rock, asphalt and housing structures often trap surface moisture underneath. If you notice what looks like one ant colony on each side of the road, it’s often one colony that has tunneled several feet deep under the structure.

Thanks to the Fire Marshall

From: Michael Smith
Subject: Fire Marshall

I would like to publicly acknowledge and thank our fire marshall for his professionalism at the crowded town council meeting on Monday (when the Pittsboro Place zoning was discussed). Many concerned citizens and people representing the developers were trying to get into the limited space available, and he certainly seemed to be keeping things fair.

Thanks, Tom!
