I am posting this for a friend.  Please respond to her directly.

School House Blues

It is the start of another school year.   Summer break has come to an end and so has our freedom of choice when it comes to where we want our children to go to school.

Just when you think your children are well grounded, up comes a root.  My husband and I are a concerned parents and life-long citizens of Chatham County.  My son is an upcoming freshman who has always attended Pittsboro schools.  He attended Pittsboro Elementary and Horton Middle School and had always planned on attending Northwood High School.

I am writing with regard to the “free to a good home” advertisement that appeared in the section of the chatham chat list. I normally write to individuals when I see these ads to help understand bad things that can happen to animals advertised for sale this way.

People in Chatham care enough to help

I’ll add my comments to the lost pet topic  on the chatlist.

It’s lovely to live in a place where people will want to know and assist if you are looking for your pet. These situations cannot always be prevented. We lost Jimmycarter, our big young tomcat, a few years ago. We had him from a kitten.

Defending pet owners whose animals get lost

Subject: Response to Jeannette Baranger concerning pet Care

Jeannette:

Bravo! I wanted to post defending pet owners whose animals get lost, but you did it so much more eloquently than I could have.

Pets are still animals, and they need some outdoor time. I have had many dogs stray TO my house, and I just feed them and, if they are so inclined, send them on their way. If there is some identification on them, I call the owner. If they stay more than a week, and have no collar, then they go to the vet, and become mine.

The misfortune to lose a pet

Subject: RE: lost and found pets

In response to the lost and found animals posting, I am a bit disappointed that someone would automatically think just because an animal gets lost, that it is not loved or taken care of. Having worked with animals of all kinds for over twenty years and having my own pets for over twice that time, I can say accidents happen whether we want them to or not. You can never completely prepare for the unexpected with animals and be sure, the unexpected will happen. I myself had a pet dog (who was old, deaf, and blind) get lost for several hours one day through a mishap of my husband (who by the way thought I would divorce him for loosing my beloved pet). The dog was loved, well cared for, and continued to lead a long and comfortable life after we recovered her later that day thanks to a thoughtful Samaritan.

First, I’d like to thank Wanda for a very real and down to earth statement about Pittsboro and the “state of things” to come concerning growth…I agree wholeheartedly and thank you from the bottom of my heart for such a true and honest opinion of the growth in Pittsboro.

My Hermit Crab Died

Subject: My Hermit Crab Died

It really did. No family member has come forward to tell me but I know that it is true. I am not too broken up about it. I know that it has died because I found it’s dried out carcass on a paper towel on my kitchen counter, next to the new hermit crab habitat and the recent butterfly and wayward lizard containment system. At first I thought it
was a shrimp, lost and forlorn.

Important Point about Carolina BREWERY

Subject: The Important Point about Carolina BREWERY

There’s been lots of debate about Carolina Brewery. Very little of it has been about the most important part, the Brewery part.

I picked up a “growler”, which is their beer in 1/2 gallon jugs (very appropriate for our region, except the local stuff my grandfathers acquired in gallon jugs was much higher octane :) ). there were at least 4 different styles to choose from, ranging from light ale to a stout. I chose the Firecracker Ale because it sounded interesting with plenty of hops and a complex blend of spices, according to helpful staffmember. My favorites are dark beers, but when it’s near 100 degrees outside I often prefer a lighter beer, especially wheat beers.

Lost and found animals

Subject: lost and found animals

As someone who has just moved to this wonderful area, I have been dismayed at the numerous postings of lost/found dogs. I have also seen many bodies of “lost” dogs on the sides of the roads.

There are so many people who seem to “own” dogs here in Chatham County. Can we really own dogs, or have we been given the privilege of taking care of them during their lives here on Earth? If we partake of this privilege . should we not then be very aware that these animals depend on us to take care of them, including making sure they are safe and loved? I am happy to hear that the woman’s old, deaf dog was found not far from his home.

Piedmont Biofuels Fined $10,000 for release of pollutants

Piedmont Biofuels is worried about the environment being disturbed with the construction of the shopping center in town but they have to pay about $10,000 in fines and fees after an accidental release of pollutants into the Pittsboro sewer system.

Hmmmm that seems kind of interesting to say the least. For employees to say they were not aware that they were releasing material that can kill off microorganisms and fish. I say Hogwash!
