Dear Mr. Logan, Mr. Moody, and School Board members:  

I am a parent of two daughters at Perry Harrison School. I have been the PTSA President there for three years as well as the girls' softball, basketball, and soccer coach for the last 6 years. I was a teacher and coach in Chatham County Schools from 1993-2000. Last year, I started a travel basketball team for girls ages 9-10 in the Pittsboro and North Chatham area. There are not a lot of local opportunities for young girls to play competitive basketball all year round and I wanted to start an affordable program in our area. With the fee increase you propose for using the gym at Perry Harrison School, my program will be forced to end. It is outrageous the amount of money the county expects community organizations to pay for the use of their facilities.  

My players' families paid for uniforms, tournaments, travel and lodging, and of course, gym use fees. This past year CC Schools charged us $8.00 an hour. Luckily, two teachers' daughters were on the team and supervised our practices for free. We hold two 2-hour practices a week. Practice runs August through October and again in the spring from March through June. This past year we would have paid $896 for 112 hours of gym use. This year that fee will jump to $2800. I can't ask the families of my players to pay this in addition to the other costs incurred by travel basketball.  

I started this program with a number of goals -- we not only focus on the fundamentals of basketball but on teamwork, self-esteem, and work ethic. I hoped to prepare these girls for middle school and high school basketball. Some have aspirations to play in college. This team was a great opportunity not only to improve on their basketball skills but to help prepare them for life. It is unfortunate that I will have to tell these girls that we can no longer have a team because the school system has made it unaffordable.  

Please reconsider such a large increase in fees for facilities usage. I understand that times are tough, but you are doing a great disservice to the Chatham County community.

People had better not drive in Germany less than a  minimum speed limit in
the left hand lane.If they do,they get a traffic ticket for driving too
slow.Perhaps that is what we need in North Carolina.They also incur the
displeasure of the German auto driver who will definitely tailgate and flash
their headlights until the discourteous driver moves over.
 In Europe it is the slower driver who is discourteous,negligent and
unlawful when driving in the outside lane and is holding up drivers driving
the speed limit and wanting to pass.

Subject: Back to the Dark Ages

I bought the HDTV, and converter box for the other TV.
For months, both TVs pick up stations (air and HD) with indoor rabbit ear antennas (specified for HD use).  The signal broke up a lot, but at least there was some accessible programming in good weather, no wind, no rain, no leaves on trees, etc.  Now that air TV signal ceased, and converted to digital, I get nothing…. “auto scan† in programming the TVs picks up nothing… not even PBS.  I’m reluctant to run around purchasing roof top antennas, (that are also useless in wind, rain, summer leaves, etc) or getting on some unaffordable satellite service without hearing from others what is working, what is not, and at what price.  I do not even watch much TV, since so much of my time is spent in the Internet-foot-path [dial-up].  So I do not believe satellite service is a good value for me, UNLESS, you all are finding a bundled service of satellite for TV AND high-speed Internet???? (and at what cost???)
        Please do share if you have some workable, budget-minded solutions… perhaps it will help others.

For those of you insisting that everyone move into the right lane when
other drivers are tailgating you, please remember that to turn left, you
have to be in the left lane.  It is not possible to wait until the last
minute to prepare for a left turn because that creates reckless lane
switching.  I and many others turn left every day at the Northwood light
(heading South) to go to work at the Carolina Living and Learning
Center.  Thanks.

Subject: Trey, Jimmy Pharr Speech clarification

       I just read the Bullentin Board comments about the talk I gave on my son Trey, for the first time, never having been there before.  I wish to clear up a contentious point, and wish to do so here. (I registered on BB but am waiting approval).
      Trey's 69 IQ rating was NOT as a result of his computer answer about "the chicken or the egg".  The teacher at Lennon Baker Children's Hospital School, actually listened to Trey's explanation and applauded him for it.   The IQ test in question was administered at UNC by a separate group.   Ida & I watched thru a window and actually thought he was doing very well.   It was the shockingly low results from THESE tests that the bureaucrats made their ridiculous determinations and negative predictions, which, after the shock, we fought.  They reluctantly agreed to retest in 6 months & came up with the same results, which we again fought. 
      All these "experts" were the ones trying to keep Trey out of Pittsboro Primary and predicting doom and gloom for him, not the school itself.
      It was also these same "professionals" mostly from UNC, who declared that Trey must also be autistic after we defended him by saying he could read the Genesis creation story in the Bible at 3 and 1/2 years old and could say the alphabet, both of which we had taught him.
      I want to clear up that point of contention that has led to a debate on the Bulletin Board.  I WILL ALSO ADD THAT YEARS LATER, TREY TOOK AN ONLINE IQ TEST AND SCORED 127.
      Futher I'd like to apologize for some other confusion.   That was my first public telling of Trey's story (and of mine).   While most people were extremely kind and generous to me afterword - and I do thank you all so much -   I was very nervous, wasted too much time in the beginning, and thought I did poorly and ran out of time.  Because of my poor time management, I wasn't able to address the political ramifications except in a handout I distributed.   This has led to debate on the bullentin board that I take full responsible for. 
      Like most proud parents, Ida and I are extremely proud of Trey acomplishments, especially given the negative predictions of those bureaucrats.    It is also a fact that people proudly defend their political ideaology when it is perceived to be under attack.   Maturity and reason usually go out the window in our blind defense of those principles.
     I'll just say that those groups and individuals wanted one direction for Trey and Trey's parents wanted another.  Thanks to Mary Cooper, Trey's kindergarden teacher and others at Pittsboro Primary, we were finally allowed our choice to mainstream Trey at the local elementary school.
     I will also add that we aggressively sought out help for our son's needs that we could not meet, such as medical, physical, emotional, and spiritual from our church, UNC and Duke hospitals, and CCDC - the Paul Braxton special needs center in Siler City.  So we are not opposed to public agencies, but in all these cases, we initiated and approved all actions, and saw the good sense in what was recommended and in what was done.
     And I will gladly open myself up to anyone who wishes to discuss this with me, including my critics (but not to my wife or my son), by encouraging you to call, email or visit me.  
     It never dawned on me that I would be charged by someone as "exploiting my son for political purposes".   Believe me, I agonized, sweated, fretted, worried, over this to the point of almost cancelling.   But Trey's inspiring life story could help many other people if handled correctly.   That motivation trumped my personal "feet of clay", and any unintended negative feedback.   My only selfish motive was that I thought it might also help Trey in his current job seach since graduating college, and I even forgot to put that plug in for him !!!!

Subject: Goat's Milk & Poison Ivy

I am SUPER allergic to poison ivy, poison oak and all those other "poison" plants.  So allergic that someone burning brush with poison in it and the smoke gets on me - I've got it.  I think this latest "bout" with it was caused by my dog going outside, getting in it, then coming back in and giving it to me.   I don't know how else I could have gotten it this time.  

Anyway - I saw online some articles about drinking goat's milk as a way of building up the immune system.  Apparently the theory is that the goats eat poison ivy/oak/sumac and somehow it is coveyed into their milk and if humans drink the goat's milk it builds up their immunity.

Does anyone out there know about this theory - if it works or if it is just a waste of time and effort.  I'm ready to try just about anything!!!

Subject: Driving on 15-501

In response to Pat, I want to mention that for those of us who live off 15-501, the left line is not a passing lane but a turn lane for us to gain access to our roads.  15-501 is not like an interstate where the slower traffic must keep right - sometimes we are turning.  So please don't ride our bumpers when we're trying to turn off onto our roads without getting killed!!

In response to "reckless driving" on 15-501, I also get very frustrated with people who are "meandering" at 40-45 mph in the passing lane while on the phone, talking or singing.  Pay attention!  Dive in the RIGHT lane!!  People need to get back to basics.  Drive on the right side and pass on the left.  Don't sit in the left lane forcing other drivers to pass you on the right because you are not following the law, paying attention or just don't care.  That is often what is causing "reckless driving" in my opinion.  And if you happen to be one doing the "speed limit" but are in the left lane and someone is on your tail..  move over.  Its simple.  Don't be the road guardian.  If they are speeding they will eventually get caught down the road by the many unmarked cars.  If they want to move past you and you won't move over, then yes they will pass on the inside.  Don't be the road police, as I tell my kids.  Stay right unless passing!Pat
