For changing the tone of the chatlist today.

You are right, there are amazing things happening in our community and you are right to point out the generosity found here.

Tami Schwerin and Lyle Estill have given so much to our community. I am always saddened when they are slammed here.
They both work very long hours, often with their kids at their side doing good public work. This work goes way beyond Piedmont Biofuels, The Abundance Foundation and the Plenty.

Chatham Soccer League, Chatham County Schools, Central Carolina Community College, Friends of the Library, Chatham Marketplace, Pittsboro Farmer's Market, Family Violence and Rape Crisis and the Chatham Arts Council are organizations they have donated time and money to over the years. I know there are more.

There are few among us who give so much to our community and think they should be applauded rather than slammed here at every opportunity.

Thanks again Amber, let's take this forum up a notch and share our good news. Tell us what you have been up to.

Subject: RainSoft - hysulex

I was wondering if anyone in Chatham has/knows of someone that owns or operates a Hysulex unit from RainSoft. The system is only 4 years old and the timer is going on it. We also need to look at rebedding. We know there is a warranty on the system but have asked the dealer we purchased it from for the paperwork at least 20 times and we keep getting ignored. All we want is the warranty info so we can read it to determine what is included (parts, labor, etc.). I've tried contacting RainSoft directly but they said that I must contact a local dealer. I have another dealer's number but they are in Southern Pines. I do plan on contacting them Monday. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Can anyone tell me where I can go to see how the lottery money is dispersed ?  I saw a commercial where they collected 1 billion dollars so far . I also hear and it may or may nor be correct that the governor grabbed some of that money for the state debt . My understanding was that money and lottery program was earmarked education only . How can they redirect the money from that program when its for education only to pay for non educational expenses ? I have heard many teachers state they haven't seen any of that money yet . Where is it going ? If they have raised so much money ,, why are teachers and educational expenditures being cut ?  I have another question , I overheard a conversation where someone involved with a contractor stated there were $600,000 worth of cosmetic improvements being made to the governors mansion . If money is so tight and we are being forced to consider new taxes and a higher gas tax then why are we spending $600,000 on cosmetic improvements on the governors mansion . I recall there were repairs needed that were important to its structural integrity that were completed while governor Easley was in office because he had to stay elsewhere while the work was completed . The mansion was to my knowledge in generally good condition after the last renovations were complete .  My last question is , If we as citizens are suffering from a bad economy and we have to stop new purchases and major improvements until we get our finances in order ,, why is it right for the state to increase taxes instead of tabling new projects while  focusing on maintenance and cutting expenditures ?  I'm tired of education and social services getting axed ever time the budget gets tight . We have a new bridge going in on 902 and it will improve that part of the road but the existing bridge is still structurally sound enough to last at least 5 more years . That project could have been delayed . Its a small example of putting your priorities right . I feel contractors have such a grip on Raleigh you wont see any new roads or new bridges be tabled ,, you will see teachers fired and people who already have little get even less . its not right ,, our gas tax isn't right ,our property values and taxes aren't right ,and its not right we have to cut back when our government picks n chooses where they cut back if any at all and burn us with even more taxes .  can anyone answer me ?   Good nite Mark :)

The BOE had a lot of discussion about changing the meeting location. Here
are the reasons:
1. They are using more technology (projectors and wireless laptops) at the
meetings. At some schools there have been difficulties getting it set up,
as well as the staff having to drag equipment back and forth.
2. The board really doesn't interact with the school community at board
meetings - I have been to most of the meetings over the past year and a
half, and I can tell you that there are rarely any parents or staff members
from the school (unless the principal instructs all staff members to
attend, which happened at least once.) I think the meeting a year ago at
North Chatham was the only one where a parent from that school actually
made a public comment. The district has recognized student accomplishments,
but only coincidentally has this been at the student's own school. Pretty
much the only attendees at any meetings in the past year and a half have
been people directly concerned with an issue at that meeting, or a small
group of folks who regularly come to most meetings (Pete Rubinas, Steve
Cooper, Dave Jaeger, the reporter from the newspaper, John Zaremba, and
myself - my apologies if I forgot someone). A number of school system
employees attend most/all board meetings - most of them are required to
attend as part of their jobs.
3. The facilities at the schools vary - sometimes it is a the library, and
other times in the multi-purpose room. In the large rooms, logistics
(making sure everyone can hear and see) are sometimes difficult.
4. The principals have to stay to open doors and arrange (and rearrange)
the meeting room. SAGE is a high school, so the kids can help, and the
library is big enough that there won't be much rearrangement needed. (Not
sure what will happen in state funding cuts result in the closing of SAGE.)
5. There will be a minimal savings of time and travel since the meetings
won't be in the far reaches of the county.
6. There should be less confusion about where the meeting is - first (or
only) in a month at the central office, second at SAGE.

Subject: BOE changes long time meeting policy

Does anyone know why the Board of Education has decided to stop having
regular meetings at the individual schools? Next year all regular meetings
will be held at SAGE. Really sorry to see this happen. One more buffer
between the system and it's users. The BOE's annual meetings at the schools
were a great way to show accomplishments and air concerns. Folks would come
who may have never thought to attend a BOE meeting. I do not understand the
motivation behind this change, unless it is financial.

Subject: Bynum front porch series

hey all, thanks to gene as ever for this wonderful forum. Last Friday
night, the 5th was awesome at the porch. We were graced with an excellent band,
"Them Other Fellas". Smoking hot harmonica/guitar/upright bass/drums combo
that  hit some amazing chords and tones. These "other fellas" sounded, and
looked,  almost exactly like the harmonica bob and near blind james combo,
and I'm almost  certain they stole many of their licks because it really
sounded grand!...lotta  you folks missed a great show, kudos also to Barney's hot
dogs, they too  were tonally superb. Thanks also should go out to the
volunteers staffing  the events, a more pleasant afternoon is hard to imagine,
and at a great  venue.This front porch series is a well kept secret and I'd
personally  appreciate it if we kept this quiet, good seating is always
available, 7:00 pm  fridays in central downtown bynum. A musicologist's dream last
