Thank you for sending me this list.  I now know which of my friends I should
pressure to end their participation.  I was there in Pittsboro Feed when
Lyle was putting the pressure on Christine and David, it was sickening.
Y'all are a little too overzealous in your pursuit of the program.  You
yourself talked me out of participation with how pushy you were being.  It
looks like that zeal is going to be what kills it.  It also will probably
kill the willingness of folks to work with you and Lyle in future
endeavors.  I really hope this does not hurt the Chatham Marketplace, it
would truly be a shame.  My advise is to let the Plenty die, try to rebuild
your reputation, learn from your failure and move on to a worthy endeavor
that Pittsboro might be a little more receptive to.

Subject: Response on Antonella's Post

First off let me say that I am in fact very happy that my post on the  
PLENTY has generated so much attention, despite it being somewhat  
negative.  It is obvious that something about this topic has been  
simmering for a while, and I am happy to be the target of so much hate  
mail in order to have a much needed conversation.

Also a couple of corrections:
1. I do not work for Piedmont Biofuels.  I am the former Executive  
Director of the Biofuels Cooperative, which is in itself a small  
business, but currently work as an independent consultant on energy  
policy.  So any comments and negativity should be directed at me, not  
at them.  I mistakenly used my old Piedmont email address, since that  
is the address where my Chatlist emails come.
2. I am not proposing a boycott of Antonella's.  I never used that  
word, and did not ask anyone else to not shop there in my email.  I  
simply stated my personal choice, and I am not so presumptuous as to  
think that my personal choice would be powerful enough to be seen as  
intimidating.  I do understand why people would feel uncomfortable  
about me bringing this to a public forum, but the few days before I  
had seen positive posts about the Salon, and felt it would be just as  
appropriate to have critique as praise.  That is the purpose of a  
public forum after all.

Finally, before I respond, the tone of this conversation really needs  
to change.  The Chatlist has a tendency to attract people who come  
looking for a fight.  That is not my interest, so everyone put down  
your sticks and stones.  Again, this is an important conversation to  
have, but try your best to be courteous to one another and attack  
arguments, not people.

Now in response - I have a personal stake in this because last year  
when I was director of the cooperative I paid $100/month of my  
employees and interns paychecks in PLENTYs.  I was the only employer  
at the time anywhere to do so, and yet the only place that would  
accept them was Chatham Marketplace.  So once a month I would pay my  
employees, and they would spend their PLENTYs on groceries at the  
Marketplace, and then I would come right back in and exchange the  
PLENTYs back for dollars.  And it was nice because it gave me the  
opportunity to have the conversation with my employees and interns  
about local economies, but at the same time the lack of options made  
the whole effort feel somewhat silly.  So with the help of some others  
I got a group jazzed about revitalizing this dying currency.  And one  
of the first things we realized is that it originally died because it  
was not backed by a bank.  So we decided to enlist the help of Capital  
Bank, who promised to back it, so that no merchant could be completely  
stuck with PLENTYs, as had happened in the past.

Through tremendous effort this group, which I did not at that point  
participate with, got the bank to back the PLENTY, and raised money to  
do a reprint of the currency, and redid the website, and much other  
stuff, all on a volunteer basis.  And the reason they did all of this  
work, is yes, as one post predicted I would say - to put Pittsboro on  
the map.  In fact, it is EXACTLY this that we are trying to do.  We  
are trying to get more young people to move down here, to find more  
ways to build community, to change this town into something more fun  
and interesting, and to bring more life to what would otherwise just  
be any other NC town.  And what I don't understand is why that effort  
shouldn't be supported.

I understand exactly why Antonella's chose not to accept the PLENTY,  
but that reason is not good enough for me.  Antonella's will benefit  
from all of the new life that things like the PLENTY, and Piedmont  
Biofuels, and other similar initiatives, bring to this town.   The  
reason that it is important for Antonella's to accept the PLENTY is  
precisely because Piedmont Biofuels and others are paying employees in  
PLENTY's, and in order for it to work there must be places to spend  
them.  If Antonella's cannot accept the PLENTY because revenues are  
low, there are alternatives - they can say they can only accept them  
as tips, or just a percentage, or set a quota on how much they can  
take per month, or a number of other ways.  The 10% loss is intended  
to be a back up, to mitigate the risk of being unable to convert them,  
not the first choice to do so.  The purpose is to promote greater  
circulation of money locally, not offer a 10% discount.

So finally - perhaps my tone was a bit standoffish in the last email.  
My apologies to Antonella's if my email came across as an attack, it  
was not intended to be one, nor a call for a boycott.  I did intend to  
bring this conversation to the fore because although the PLENTY may  
seem silly or fringe at face value, it is in fact critically important  
to support.  It is for reasons like the PLENTY that more people are  
coming, that new businesses are opening, and that the town is moving  
in the right direction.  I hope that is recognized and appreciated.

I have reserved judgement on this Plenty thing for quite a while. I had a three-day email exchange with Ms. Frey a month or so ago, and had a list of questions that never really got answered... with Ms. Frey saying that email was not her favorite means of communicating, but that my questions were good, and feel free to call her at 428-0561 to discuss my concerns. I think now is the time to call her.

I really never made the connection between the Plenty and Chatham Marketplace. Silly me. I should have known, because both give off that air of exclusivity that (as Eric Shook pointed out in yesterday's Chatlist)  school cliques had. "If your not in our club, then we won't play with you, and we'll make sure no one else will play with you either!"

So now I have made my decision, and Melissa will not be happy. I hope she doesn't spam me because of it! Meanwhile, if you agree with her position on the Plenty, then give her a call and tell her so. She doesn't like email, except to spam others, and she clearly doesn't read the Chatlist, or like the Chatham Journal.

If you disagree with her, call her as well. She deserves to have an interesting day. And while you're at it, call Matt Rudolph over at Piedmont Biofuels (321-8260) and thank him for putting the final nail in the coffin of the Plenty failure, round two.

Unfortunately, the recent bluster about the Plenty has clouded the issue of building a local, sustainable currency in the face of national and international financial uncertainty. We can build local trust and commerce or leave ourselves to the vagaries of international bankers who have no stake in Pittsboro prosperity. Included are my thoughts on a local currency previously published in the Chapel Hill Herald Sun.

Where
is the bottom to the current economic crises? Many of us have been
asking this question for months. The simple answer: we don't know. As
unsettling  as that might be, it can be seen as a supreme moment of
opportunity, our chance to step off the economic treadmill.

And
just how shall we do that?

With
Plenty!

What's
Plenty?

According
to B.J. Lawson, Plenty is a local currency that can help a community
“sustain itself through whatever shocks and turbulence the
increasingly globalized yet fragile economic system throws our way.â€
Lawson identifies with the Austrian Free Market philosophy. He's also
a doctor,  student of engineering systems, and software entrepreneur.
He got involved with the Plenty because of the future he hopes to see
for his three children.

Lawson
describes our debt-based system as “inherently unstable, an
addiction. It's
the physiological equivalent of a person addicted to amphetamines,
speed†. He describes what we're doing as borrowing from the future
at an endlessly compounding rate of debt, and the government is
trying to produce one last hit to satisfy our craving. Albert
Einstein marveled at the power ofcompound interest calling it the
“eighth wonder of the world†.

The
first incarnation of the Plenty failed because it was issued under
the same faulty strategy used by the Federal Reserve. However, the
Plenty couldn't exert the police power of the government to enforce
its use.

The
relaunch of our local currency, in a few weeks, will initially be
pegged to the dollar at a fixed rate of exchange. Capital Bank will
honor and back the Plenty, sort of like a foreign currency.

Go
to Capital Bank, plunk down $9.00 and get a colorful ten Plenty note.
Merchants redeem the Plenty at Capital Bank for cash at face value.
The original Plenty did not have that backing, and much of it ended
up at Weaver St. Market; and they were left holding the bag. Now the
Plenty is completely convertible into dollars.

As
a brief historic note, local currency, or scrip was a strategy used
by communities during The Great Depression to stimulate neighborly
commerce.

Because
it's a “local† currency accepted in our area, it doesn't leave
the community like the money you spend at Walmart, which drains
community prosperity. It promotes local business, supports your
neighbors and builds a local economy. That's why Capital Bank whole
heartedly backs the Plenty.

Grant
Yarber, CEO of Capital Bank in Raleigh says, “We make our money in
small and medium size towns. We want to see small business grow. When
people try something new and it keeps money local, we want to try to
support that. When that Plenty is used to pay employees, that money
stays in the community†.

If
the Plenty catches hold, it can be backed by locally produced
commodities rather than the dollar. This is how we create an
independent local economy that is actually founded on something real.
Fuel, food, housing, clothing, medical care et cetera could be the
bases of our currency. That's the way stable communities once
operated independent of external forces.

The
Federal Reserve, a monopoly, is the biggest Ponzi Scheme on earth.
The bankrupt finance industry is now extorting money from us, so they
can lend it back to us, so we can pay it back to them. How crazy is
that? We are being manipulated by financiers who pull the levers of
credit availability. As Lawson queries, “How is more debt going to
fix the problem? It's back to the amphetamines analogy. We're trying
to cure our hangover with another hit†.

My
question is: do we in Chatham have the essential independent human
spirit to take this safe offramp to a sustainable future? President
Obama is both smart and well-intentioned, but informed, serious
voices of dissent are  challenging Secretary Geithner's bank bailout
strategy. Let's exercise a local option as protection from possible
bailout failure. Building a local currency, based on local prosperity
will ensure not lack but Plenty.

Subject: Is Plenty still in use elsewhere?

As I am reading all this brouhaha on Plenty I am wondering - is still used in Orange County? And with how much success?

I wonder if my experience with local currency is typical. When I first heard of Plenty many years ago, it sounded like fun and I used it for a few months [exclusively at the only place I knew would take it then- Weaver Street].

After the novelty wore off, I stopped using it. It was like those coupons that sit in your wallet until you connect up with the appropriate place to use them, so having regular currency took precedence.

I am just a little bit curious as to why i was spammed with a large
redundant piece of email all about the Plenty, which i had previously
expressed my discontent with a public post to the chatham chatlist.
You guys spamming the non believer in hopes we will jump on the
bandwagon? I did not sign up for the "Plenty" email newsletter i am
apparently subscribed to now, which i did not do. Has anyone else
received a piece of spam from melissa frey theple...@gmail.com after
posting any sort of argument regarding said Plenty's?

Sorry but unsolicited email is unsolicited email and putting someone
else's email address into a mailing list without their permission is
indeed spamming. If anyone else has been "magically" put on the

think a submitting the email address to the national ISP blackhole
list is in order. Sorry guys, i admire your perseverance but when you
sign a network security professional up for a mailing list he didn't
want anything to do with via unscrupulous email farming practices from
the chatham county mailing list your going to get burned.

I am sorry to see the attacks against Melissa Frey. I admire her for her deep committment to the causes she believes in and for her efforts to make a difference in our community.

I agree with all people that the Plenty is a waste of time and effort and I
have researched that it is not county government backed. Just a circle of
friends starting it. I also recieved the spam and after reviewing it most
places that take it are highly specialized shops. No drug stores, no Dollar
store, and such. Most average citizens do not patronize these places that
take the Plenty.

I also think their heavy handed approach is not a nice thing and just
divides people. There is nothing wrong with the good old American dollar.
As an FYI I believe I have found a pro bono attorney to help stores get on
board with the "buy Chatham" card.

Subject: Crime and Punishment

Wow.  So a guy goes into get a haircut, and tries to leave a tip in  
PLENTYs, writes about it on the Chatlist and the culture war begins.  
Poor fellow.

I went to Antonella’s once, and it was a great experience.  I don’t  
get a lot of haircuts, so I’m not really qualified to speak on the  
subject.  I would just say Antonella’s struck me as a fine  
establishment.

But some of the responses to Matt’s post are kinda bizarre. Here’s my  
take:

To Rusty:  The PLENTY is like the “company store.”  Exactly.  Except  
there is no company.  And no store.   Still nice to have someone hum a  
few bars of a great song.

To Calvin:  I wish Matt still worked for Piedmont.  We miss him.  But  
I think Matt was speaking on behalf of Matt, and this flare up has  
nothing to do with us.

To Brad:  I like your idea of free choice.  And I think it would be  
great to stop the bullying.

To Maclyn:  Good for you.  I’m glad your husband took PLENTYs and was  
invested in the local economy.  One of the problems of PLENTY 1.0 was  
there was a chance of getting stuck with them all.  I was once stuck  
with a stack of them as well.  The nice thing about PLENTY 2.0 is they  
can be exchanged with Capital Bank.  Still can.  Take your pile of old  
PLENTYs down there, and go home with cash.  Or new PLENTYs.  Which  
ever you prefer.

To Jody and Evan: It’s true that you can’t use PLENTYs in China for  
computer stuff.  Or to pay an electric bill. I use U.S. dollars for  
that.  And I don’t take a 10% hit.  I just use PLENTYs to buy  
groceries and Internet service and car repairs and fuel and art and  
electrical work and lunches and  stuff.  A bunch of folks use them for  
rent. There is no 10% off when you use your PLENTYs to buy what you  
need.

To Ima:  Piedmont does pay employees in PLENTYs.  Those people on our  
project who wish to accept a portion of their pay in PLENTYs are  
welcome to.

To Karen:  I think you are right about contractors in hair salons.  
And it is also true that if you have nowhere to spend your PLENTYs,  
you shouldn’t accept them.  But if you do accept them, and you get a  
big stack of them, it is nice to have a way to get them back into  
circulation.  “Offload” might have been a poor choice of words.

To Mary:  I’ll be the first in line for a Buy Chatham Discount Card  
when you are ready to launch.  Local economy, after all, is what this  
is all about.

And to Amy and Julia:  Right on.  If you can’t spend PLENTYs to meet  
your needs, don’t accept them.  It is about choice.

Finally, there is no boycott, no “financial blackmail,” and no  
conspiracy.  It was merely Matt’s musings on being unable to give a  
tip in PLENTYs.  I would suggest that the bruising he is taking on the  
Chatlist does not suit the crime of his post.

Subject: Wow, The Great Divide

It's really interesting to see the spirited posts regarding Matt  
Rudolf, Antonella's and The Plenty.  I hope Antonella gets lots of  
business from
this!  My son needs a haircut badly!!

What I see here though, is way deeper than the Plenty discussion.  
What I see is a huge divide in the county of us and them.  And there  
is no THEM, it is all US.  We are all in this together.  We all want  
exactly the same thing.  We may have different ways of achieving those  
things, but we all want health, happiness and maybe some wealth too.  
(that is where local economy comes in)  We want our kids to grow up in  
a safe, stimulating and fun environment.  We want our elders to enjoy  
their life here.  We want to be able to follow our passions.

So, I propose that we have a chatlist gathering face to face so that  
we meet each other and maybe that would decrease the fire spitting and  
mis-communication.  Instead of throwing darts, we could discuss and  
learn from each other.  I'm sure that is the intention of Gene,  
anyway.  Thank you again, Gene for providing the forum.

This community is rich in many ways and way too special to keep up  
this great divide.  So, how about Ollie, Calvin and Gene and I  
organize a gathering at one of our local establishments or we could  
also have at our community space at Piedmont Biofuels on the edge of  
town.

I think we would all agree that we need to work together and not  
against each other....that is what community is all about.

Oi!  I agree with Eric Shook on the way people are behaving on this list.
The folks that are posting vitriol on the list are forgetting what it is to
be good neighbors.  A little gentle correction and a "I politely disagree.."
can go a lot further than this weird need to make caricatures out of each
other and draw up sides to every little thing.  Melissa is a really kind
lady when I have talked to her, Lyle and Matt work like crazy for what they
think is best for the town.  Antonella's gives the best haircuts in town.
Virlie's has great BLT's, I love the soda Shoppe.  The General store and
City Tap have great music and nice people work in every single store in this
town.... but for some reason we let ourselves get dragged around by the
extremes.  I hope everyone will stop posting about this for a little while
and those that are giving the PLENTY a shot, go for it.  Those who aren't
interested that is fine too.  I'll see you at the Marketplace for a latte or
at Andy's for a malt... either way.  This is a great town.

Spam is unethical by nature, and using the Chatlist as a harvesting
ground for addresses to spam is strictly against the rules.

You can't offend me, so don't waste time even thinking about that.  As
for the PLENTY, it's a lousy idea because anyone with knowledge of basic
economics can see that it can do nothing but harm the local economy, and
those reasons have been hashed out on the Chatlist multiple times
today.  It is doomed to failure because it is unsustainable in the age
of the global economy.  Tell me what auto parts factory, comb factory,
battery factory, tire factory, keyboard factory, light bulb factory,
saddle factory, or what diamond mining company accepts the PLENTY?  All
of these raw materials require real currency: the United States Dollar.  
The PLENTY increases accounting burdens on small business owners,
decreases their competitiveness and purchasing power against out-of-area
competitors, is a nightmare to make proper change for (at PLE$1.00 =
USD$0.90) and requires going to an extra bank to convert it back into
real, usable USD$.

It's a BAD IDEA.  It has the opposite effect of its stated goals,
therefore it is a complete failure, no matter how it is managed or how
widely it gets adopted.  People who want to buy local and support local
businesses will do so by buying local and spending money locally anyway!

 I would have liked to respond to the chatlist in it's entirety with
 information about the PLENTY program, but Gene has been blocking me from
 posting for months for a reason I don't understand--He allows me to receive
 the chatlist, but not post. (His recent post about our history is a very
 incomplete picture)

 I did pull a few emails from a recent chatlist digest for my bi-monthly
 e-newsletter.  I wanted to be sure those people had accurate information
 about the program directly from one of its representatives.  

 I've received responses from several others that appreciated getting our
 official newsletter as opposed to heresay or Matt's unfortunate email as
 their only impression of the PLENTY.  

 I apologize if receiving it offended you, I'll remove you immediately.

I'm stunned. I've been out of town so had not read the chatlist for  
awhile. I had no idea that something as benign as the concept of the  
Plenty could bring out so much division in a community.
Do those of you that write as hateful of messages as this one below  
stop to think even for a moment about the impact you are making on  
this sweet community or on your own well being? The cost to you and to  
the rest of us is not small. If you think that some of your neighbors  
get into quirky, eclectic things then can that not amuse you rather  
than irk you? What I love about our community is that it is so filled  
with unique people. Let there be space for all of us........the one's  
that want to mess with Plenty's and the ones that don't.
For heaven sakes........if this type of thing brings up such a growl  
in you then how in the world do you react when something truly  
difficult happens in your life?

Before writing any hateful messages on this valuable list please stop,  
take a moment to breathe and then reconsider your tone.

 connection with their use of the Chatlist to do the same.  You need to
 view the entire message with "full headers" in your mail program, then
 copy and paste the entire message source with all of the headers
 included into a new message, and send that message to ab...@gmail.com.
 There are tutorials all over the Internet on how to do this; the
 Chatlist is not the place for me to explain the procedure.  Just do it
 every time they spam you until they stop or their account is suspended
 for violating the Gmail Terms Of Use.

 You all were wondering how us computer guys stay spam-free, weren't
 you?  There's no better way to do so than to report the spammers
 directly to their mail service providers, and it shows that you won't
 stand for it.  As for the "PLENTY," I hope that junk mail was the last
 shout of desperation from something that was never a good idea in the

I was on the cusp of filling out an application, (it's actually still on my desktop with every line filled except the Payment Option) but now I'm putting that on hold.  I want everyone to know that I also don't take Discover or American Express because of the extra fees to use those particular cards (which may even be less than the 10% that the PLENTY charges), but I have never had a customer not pay or walk away because I don't accept those cards, which has happened with customers who come and want to pay with the PLENTY./div

I may, in the future, take Amex and Discover as well as the PLENTY, but for now the possibility of registering for the PLENTY has dropped from the top of my list of things to do.

I'm glad the majority of opinions voiced over the last few days are "Buy Local" not "Buy Local and use the Plenty".

I also feel that Matt really is not the majority voice here based on the chatlist entries and really should be reconsidering his values and thought processes on this one.

 Anyone associated with the development and distribution of the PLENTY, in my view, should be putting a bit of pressure on Matt to apologize to Antonella.
