We know that most children are not going to grow up to be farmers, but they are the next generation of land stewards. Much has been written lately about the child in the 21^st century being "lost in the woods," disconnected from Nature. Our summer day camps offer a nurturing and teaching environment where kids can expand their imagination, cultivate their curiosity and reconnect with the natural world. Our emphasis is on stewardship, knowledge and fun. Genesis Farm is not a place where we come to teach about farming and nature for six hours every day. This is where we live. It is our life and home. We are here when the animals go to bed at night and when they wake up in the morning. The barnyard animals are our family. Our neighbors include woodcocks, bullfrogs, bluebirds and snakes. We want to share this rural abundance with our campers. Each week, campers build, explore, grow and care for the plants, soil and animals. Our hope is that children will experience new physical and intellectual abilities, face and solve new challenges, enjoy active games, and figure out and complete creative projects. Through the guidance of our counselors and farm staff, campers will - Learn about and care for a variety of barnyard animals. - Engage in the growing cycle by planting, nurturing, harvesting and preparing food from the gardens. - Participate in group activities that emphasize hands-on investigations to explore the cycles of life in depth. - Explore their creative side through folk crafts and quiet reflection. Activities and Daily Life at Farm Camp Gather fresh eggs...dig in the dirt...plant seeds...feed and groom animals...pick berries...harvest vegetables...crush tomatoes...explore the pond...listen to birds...work with clay...build a birdhouse...make butter...play in a jugband...fix stuff and figure things out...learn to work together in small groups...get your knees dirty... What is Farm Camp? Genesis Farm is a small market farm, growing and selling vegetables, herbs, flowers, using safe and natural farming methods. Our summer day camps combine the best aspects of a very active small farm in a natural environment. Designed for ages 5-10, each session will include garden work, science activities, active games and crafts, cooking projects and of course, farm chores of all sorts. We grow and taste farm foods and prepare harvests. We also invite families to camp once a week to celebrate the harvest. We plan lots of games and crafts, and campers get to suggest activities. We balance all this activity with quiet time and reflection. We have low ratio group sizes designed for personal attention and creativity. Working on a farm requires teamwork that requires and fosters three basic values: *Respect -* *Cooperation* - *Responsibility. * *A typical day at farm camp:*** * 8:30 -- 9:00 Welcome and group time* *9:00-10:30 Morning activity: Farm and Garden * *10:30 -10:45 Snack and rest* *10:45 --12:15 Morning activity: Farm and Garden* *12:15 -- 1:15 Lunch & story time with quiet reflection* *1:15-2:45 Afternoon activity: Crafts and Games* *2:45-3:00 Come together and say goodbye* * Weekly sessions: $235.00. As spring approaches, lilies will become more common in households as potted plants or in bouquets. According to Michigan State University Extension's Grower Guide, Easter lilies are the third most important flowering pot-plant grown in the United States, with l0 to 11 million plants produced annually. Unfortunately, several types of lilies can be deadly to cats. Easter lily, tiger lily, rubrum, Japanese show lily, some species of day lily, and certain other members of the Liliaceae family can cause kidney failure in cats. Within only a few hours of ingestion of the plant material, the cat may vomit, become lethargic, or develop a lack of appetite. These signs continue and worsen as kidney damage progresses. Without prompt and proper treatment by a veterinarian, the cat will develop kidney failure in approximately 36-72 hours. All parts of these lilies are considered toxic to cats and consuming even small amounts can cause severe poisoning. If there is a lily in your home, there is always the chance that your cat could be accidentally exposed. For this reason, cat owners should avoid exposing their cats to plants of the Liliaceae and Hemerocallis family. Lilies that have been shown to cause kidney failure in cats include: COMMON NAMES SCIENTIFIC NAMES Easter lily Lilium longiflorum Tiger lily Lilium tigrinum Rubrum Lilium speciosum Japanese show lily Lilium lancifolium Day lily Hemerocallis species * please note: this list is not all inclusive Most (if not all) veterinary hospitals in Chatham County can set up an IV catheter, run fluids, give activated charcoal and perform blood tests to monitor kidney disease. Because the kidneys get harmed quickly and severely, it is always recommend to keep these plants away from cats. Please visit http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/ (ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center) for information on many other toxic plants, chemicals, etc. ANY time you have reason to believe that your pet may have ingested something toxic, call your veterinarian immediately. Activated charcoal is a wonderful drug and binds many toxins, but it MUST be given early to be effective. Thank you and have a wonderful (and safe) Easter! I’ve been offering classes in Pittsboro for 10 years now. It has developed into a wonderful, heartfelt, community gathering space, with classes held 6 times a week. Through breathing, meditation, movement and relaxation exercises, yoga joins body, mind, and spirit into a balanced whole. It can really be transformative! I use a waiting list when spaces open up in a class so let me know if you would like to join us and I will put you on the list for a future session~ For more information or to drop in on a class call: 542-4103 or cholty...@embarqmail.com or go to my web-site address below. www.cathyholtyoga.com Be well, Cathy The yoga classes nurture our need to awaken and to develop our human potential in a non-competitive environment. Almost immediately, your body responds and feels better, as yoga’s cleansing action begins to rid your body of toxins and your mind of any negativity. This brings your body into a state that is receptive for healing. The poses activate and stimulate your circulation, digestion, elimination, the nervous system and the endocrine system. It is a slow, practical, thoughtful system for improving life. -------------------- 20 -------------------- Date: Wed, 8 Apr 2009 08:42:46 -0400 From: "Darien Russell" darienruss...@embarqmail.com Subject: Need web designer Does anyone know a good web designer? Because of my high visibility at the RDU airport, and the fact that my 'clown car' with the choo-choo train all over it does stick out a little, I have been approached by another much larger than myself RDU shuttle service company based in Raleigh to partner with them as they feel Pittsboro is "probably a good market" but too far away for them to make money and the few trips they have made to Pittsboro for an airport run is almost double what I charge. What I think really happens is when they are contacted about to/and or from RDU from the PBO area, they don't get the business because of their rates. Also, I have been told, have no proof, thus will not name who this limo service is, that they give a quote over the phone that sounds ok, yet when they discover that the trip involves more mileage than they expected, they charge more. I do not, never have, never will, but am glad to accept tips from appreciative customers who realize my base rate of $55 is very fair. At least 90% of my customers do tip. To get to the point, I am able to handle what I do at least for the time being, but I will eventually probably need to expand, and do not plan on becoming a part of this other service in Raleigh. Mine is a Pittsboro based business as I have been in Pittsboro for 26 years this August, and I plan to stay in Pittsboro. I am open, however, to an investor(s)/partner(s) who would like to get into a very interesting and 'different every day' business and who has some capital to do so. The amount would not be a tremendous amount, the person would need to be a people person and have a good driving record, and would need to have the desire to make money and be able to work a very flexible and varied time schedule. I have finally obtained pretty good word of mouth recognition and a very good reputation for reliability and good service, and that person would need to work so that PittsboroTrekExpress will continue on this course. I got sick and tired of sitting in an office in Raleigh for 15 years, and have no regrets whatsoever about making the move. If you feel the same way, or have lost your job and before you spend your savings looking for another job, this may be for you.
