The school will be offering Music and Latin classes for interested families. Registration is now open for the 2009-10 school year, which begins in September. As part of the classical Christian curriculum, Latin is introduced to the Academy’s students beginning in the 3rd grade. Homeschooling families who are seeking outside assistance in this subject may consider enrolling their child(ren), grades 2-5 (ages 7-10 by August 31, 2009) in the school’s program. Pastor Jerry Ward, Pittsboro Church of the Nazarene, will be teaching the class. He graduated in 2001 with a religion degree from Trevecca Nazarene University. He continued his education at Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, eventually returning to the South to attend Duke Divinity School. Music classes, for grades 2-5 (ages 7-10 by August 31, 2009), will also be available to homeschoolers. The class is taught by a local parent and member of the school, Amanda Sparks, who holds a degree in music performance (voice) and an endorsement for teaching music. She is classically trained in piano, voice, and several instruments. Students are taught proper singing technique, how to sing in harmony, and performance skills while learning hymns and quality songs. They also study beginning music theory including rhythm pattern repetition, reading and writing simple music notation, and beginning music vocabulary. Students are introduced to the instruments of the orchestra and begin to identify them while listening to selected classical music literature. There is also an emphasis on music history and music genre. During the Spring semester, the students will learn to play the recorder. Tuition for the Latin class, which meets Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at HRCA from 9:00-9:45 A.M. (with review materials provided for Monday and Friday) is $50.00/month per child. The Music class, scheduled for Wednesday mornings from 9:45-10:45 A.M., is $40.00/month per child. Applications, requiring a $50.00 registration fee for either class, are now available. Students may register for both classes, specially priced at $75.00/month per child, with a $75.00 registration fee. Seating is limited. For more information or to request an application, please call the School Office at 919-533-4139 or visit the school’s web site: www.HawRiverChristian.org -------------------- 3 -------------------- Date: Fri, 27 Mar 2009 09:14:12 -0700 (PDT) From: Brett Harvey bbhgrasscutt...@yahoo.com Subject: Post to chatlist please BBH Grass Cutting, located in Pittsboro, is currently running an Early Bird Special. Her cat got the pollen on his coat and ended up in hospital receiving a special $1800 treatment to save his life from exposure to the lily. We had no idea lilies were so dangerous to cats and there are a lot of them around at Easter time. This applies only to true lilies, not the many other flowers with the lily name. The florists don't seem to inform or warn people about this danger. If a cat is exposed to a lily - whether it is the pollen or if they bite the leaf or petal - they have an 18-hour window during which to start the poison treatment of forcing fluids through the kidneys, then administering charcoal to absorb the poison. This treatment is only given at special facilities, two in this area. This must be done within 18 hours even though the signs of illness will not show up until 2 days after exposure! The cat will appear perfectly fine but will still need this treatment to save its life. So just don't bring lilies into a house where cats live. For more information or to request an application, please call the School Office at 919-533-4139 or visit the school’s web site: www.HawRiverChristian.org -------------------- 29 -------------------- Date: Thu, 02 Apr 2009 08:10:01 -0400 From: Jeff Howell chathamspo...@gmail.com Subject: Bicycles serviced and repaired Well spring and summer are here. Each year, it seems the ecological and sustainability practices become more and more prevalent at this festival which obviously has a commitment to the earth as well as to education about its care. Shakori Hills also has a lot of friends and allies in this commitment. This past fall, on Saturday, while the festival (and local) favorites The Carolina Chocolate Drops were playing their set, the festival had a significant power failure, causing stage sound do go out. Some quick, smart festival organizers noticed the http://www.biofuels.coop/Piedmont Biofuels generator, on display nearby, and hooked it up to the sound making all well again in festival land. A quick answer to the emergency, it said a lot about the festival that Piedmont Biofuels was present and that the fun was saved through natural power. In further efforts to investigate alternative power sources, Shakori Hills has teamed up with http://theabundancefoundation.org/The Abundance Foundation - a local organization whose purpose is to increase public awareness of sustainable energy usage and local food consumption in Chatham County. Together, the organizations are working on a plan to make the festival and its home solar power dependent in the next few years. They are taking donations from the public, and will have a solar panel on display at the festival to tell attendees how it all works. Throughout the weekend, as festival goers buy food, throw out their trash, and clean up the area around their camp site, they will notice Shakori Hills's efforts to cut down on litter going to the landfill. All food vendors provide compostable plates, bowls, cups, and utensils, which are separated out at trash stations around the food area. There are also recycling and composting sites throughout the grounds. For a festival that has a peak of 7000 attendees, that's a lot of avoided garbage. And for drinking water, festival goers can bring their water bottles and refill them with water from the Blue Green Machine. The Machine is a water filtering system that takes water from the local well and filters it, giving free water to anyone who needs it, thanks to their owners, http://www.kinetico.com/Kinetico. Probably the most influential Earth Day activity at the festival will be the Sustainablity Fair. This year, the fair will be a little different and will be made up of forums and speakers as well as demonstrations throughout the four days. Here is a list of some of the topics and speakers: - Laura Lauffer from Central Carolina Community College's Green Building Program will lead a discussion about involving the use of renewable resources and materials in building design and renovation (Fri, 1pm). - Pierre Lauffer will be leading Maintaining Natural Resources as Natural Assets for a Sustainable Future¬ (Friday, 3:30pm) a group discussion on maintaining regional natural resource capacity in face of community growth and development. - The Eight Principals of Deep Ecology (Fri, 4:30pm & Sat, 10:00am). Valentine Antony, Compost Coordinator for Shakori Hills and a Sustainable Agriculture major at Central Carolina Community College will explore humanity's dynamic relationship to our biosphere and the need for a spiritually rooted environmental movement. - Compost Conscious "The Secret Life of Compost." (Sat 11:00am) Bob and Camille Armantrout will present basic composting techniques using low-tech, inexpensive methods that almost anyone can follow. - Public Transportation and its Role in Sustainable Communities. Allison Springer of Chatham Transit Network will lead us in an interactive brainstorming discussion about problems and solutions associated with sustainable public transportation that meets the community's needs. (Sat, noon) - Green Building 101 Public Outreach Presentation. Michael Chandler of Chandler Design-Build, Inc. presents an overview of green building and how the industry is responding to increased energy scarcity and climate change by improving the way homes are built and maintained. (Fri, 2:15pm & Sat, 1:00pm) - The Power of Solar (Sat, 2:30pm). Solar energy expert, Ed Witkin of Carrboro Solar Works and Solar Tech South will lead a basic interactive discussion of the benefits of solar energy and the process of converting to solar power. Getting to and from the festival can also be done in a way that is good to the earth. Durham's http://www.ninthstbakery.com/9th Street Bakery will be offering rides in its http://www.shakorihills.org/59/Bio Bus. The bus stops at One World Market in Durham, Hamm's in Chapel Hill, and Weaver Street Market in Carrboro. More info and schedule can be found at www.shakorihills.org. I was just wanting to let everybody know that we are taking in registration forms for our Summer Riding Camp '09. I am very excited about our camp this year, it should be a lot of fun! This year we have 4 different sessions. Each camp morning will start with a one hour lesson. After campers put their horses away properly (using the skills we will be teaching them) they have a lunch break. Each afternoon we will explore a special topic (which reflects the theme of the week), and enjoy a healthy snack provided by us! After all of this "serious" work and learning, we always make time for play! Kids like to go down to the creek and stomp around, play tag, hide and go seek, play in the sprinkler, or make art to bring home to parents. We also have "horse related play", where kids pretend to jump the jumps, have grooming contests, the sky is the limit! Session 1: Basic Horsemanship (June 15-19th) Campers will learn basic horse care. We will learn how to groom horses, lead, tack up, etc. Safety around horses (always a priority at CHF), will be stressed, as well as proper technique. This week is geared towards a beginner, but can also be for a more advanced rider. Session 2: Games Week (June 22-26th) This is a new addition to camp! The kids are going to be very excited about this week. After a serious lesson in the morning we will devote much of the ride to "games". Egg and spoon, the ever popular tag, highly competitive ride-a-buck... That sort of thing! The kids love it, and they also learn important riding skills while playing... Session 3: Vet Week (June 29th- July 3rd) Is your child interesting in being a vet? Love taking care of animals? This is the week for them. We teach the kids some of the finer points of horse care (age appropriate, of course). Campers will learn how to wrap a leg, take a temp., about different diseases, lameness and much more. We go to Apex Equine Vet Hospital and meet with our vet who will give a tour of the hospital and answer questions. The kids never fail to surprise me with the questions that they ask and how much they love learning about this! Session 4: Horse Show Week (July 6-10th) Our most popular week in camp! Kids learn all about horse showing. They learn about how to compete in a show and how to get ready! We show them how to get the horse properly groomed for the show (bathing, clipping, braiding, etc). At the end of the week we hold the "CHF Camp Horse Show". Family and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend and watch the kids compete! Camp Hours are from 9-4 Monday through Friday. We have extended hours if needed! The camp cost $300 per week. Each kid may dye 2 eggs (provided by the Easter Bunny) and kids are invited to bring a couple more if they wish. First Sunday is a wonderful way to support local Artisans and the Historic Downtown Pittsboro Businesses. It is vital to the well-being of our town for us to become acquainted with the folks who live here, and who provide goods and services to this vibrant, friendly community. Please invite your friends and family to spend the afternoon in town, exploring the unique character of this community, and helping to spread the word about our great folks! -------------------- 49 -------------------- Date: Thu, 2 Apr 2009 15:26:36 -0700 (PDT) From: Lloyd DeWald ldew...@yahoo.com Subject: Items for sale in Pittsboro 1-Compaq Presario 6000 desktop computer, Pentium 4 CPU at 2.53 GHz, silver and black tower case, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB hard drive, firewire card, front and back USB ports, ethernet on motherboard, CD/DVD player drive, CD/DVD recorder drive, 3.5" FD, Windows XP Home with restore CDs, keyboard, trackball, and 15" black IBM E54 CRT monitor. $250. ================================================================================= 2-Dell Dimension 2350 desktop computer with 15" LCD color monitor, Pentium 4 CPU at 2.2 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 30 GB hard drive, TV tuner/Radio tuner card with remote control, firewire card, front and back USB ports, ethernet on motherboard, CD/DVD player drive, CD-RW player/recorder drive, keyboard and mouse, New clean re-install of Windows XP Professional. $250. ================================================================================= 3-HP Compaq TC1100 Tablet PC with removable keyboard and docking station.
