Located in the Western Chatham Senior Center in Siler City, Chatham CARES Community Pharmacy was formed by a group of local healthcare professionals. The most common reason for poor management of chronic health issues and for readmisison to hospitals is patients' failure take prescribed medicines, and often that failure is do to the prohibitive cost of pharmaceuticals and insurance. The Pharmacy fills prescriptions for commonly prescribed medicines and does not distribute scheduled drugs (e.g. no narcotics).
Chatham Cares is a member of the Association of Free Clinics of NC. The majority of the medicines that are distributed are donated to the Pharmacy from distributors and manufacturers. My mother in law has helped to support her family for decades now selling flowers and vegetables at the area farmers markets. Her mother was one of the original venders at the "old" Carrboro market. My daughter helps as the fourth generation selling on Sats. with her Aunt and Grandma. But that may be the end of the line.
The drought has taken it's toll over the last years but that is nothing compared to the displaced deer population. Thank you Briar Chapel. Just another "small" way they will be effecting lives of their neighbors..
Anyone with any reasonable suggestions? She has a 5 foot electric fence, used Deer away, plays radio, buckshot, lights....nothing slows them down. They are invading in droves now. I'm not saying the deer weren't there before BC, but it's now become an impossible situation.
As things get harder on them, taxes, fuel, food and all the other things we all face, they are pushing 80 and watching the source of their spending money get eaten up. Their land and garden space borders Chapel Ridge. It's just a hop, skip and a jump for the displaced deer population to the buffet.
Come hunting season, we'll be looking for a dozen good shots. The thought of my 78 y.o. mother in law down in the field with a shot gun in the dark is a little scary.
We were thinking about building a chicken house upwind of BC, but that's no longer a lucrative source of extra income either. I just wanted to do it to return the neighborly way they wake me up every morning.
I doubt there's a magic potion, but any suggestions are welcomed.

The Council on Aging provides approximately 21,000 rides each year for Chatham's elderly citizens. These include trips from all parts of the county to the two Senior Centers for wellness and nutrition programs, with stops during the week for grocery shopping and to pick up medicines. We also provide individual medical transportation to Chapel Hill, Durham, Sanford and other sites.
In serving our mission to assist people who choose to live at home and avoid institutionalization, transportation is critical to our programs and services. Many of you have family, friends and neighbors who come to the senior centers for our delicious noontime meals and for the socialization and exercise programs the centers offer.
Our sevice needs are specific to the population we serve and we currently contract with two non-profit transportation providers. One is Chatham Transit Network (CTN), the NC DOT grant-seeking authority for Chatham County as conveyed by the County Commissioners. We also contract with Sister-2-Sister transportation. A family-run non- profit with offices in Siler City, Sister-2-Sister provides a full range of daily transportation services as well as weekend routes for church-goers and limited on-call overnight medical transportation.

The generalizations about “lefties and righties” is tiresome and polarizing. From any position on the political continuum, I’ve not met anyone who does not support improved local infrastructure. The conflict remains “how to pay for it”. I’ve worked in private and public sectors, and I work in a private sector that manages public funds. I have to say I have lost much faith in financial efficiencies of our tax dollars, and hence, the best “bang for the buck” we eventually see. Therefore, arguments about raising taxes fall on deaf ears in my fatigued mind, YET, I agree with the growing needs of our county infrastructure. It would be wonderful to have an economist on the chatlist (an Al Cooke clone whose beat is economics) help us understand such complexities. Raising taxes rarely addresses issues adequately… there seems always to be laws of unintended consequences. For example, raising taxes reduces the spending power of the citizens which can depress the local economy, as we see with rising fuel costs. People simply have less to spend…. Businesses suffer and possibly shut down. Likewise, not fueling the infrastructure may result in people leaving the area, moving elsewhere (perhaps to the glee of many), but those consequences harm those who stay; businesses loose patronage, property values go down, ya-dee-da… you know the rant. If we could get past the labeling/name-calling/over-generalizations and simplifications, it would be really wonderful to learn more substance, facts and economic theory, for which we would all need to really discuss these complex issues with intelligence. I feel confident that the issues are merely "growing pains" and everything indicates that the management/ownership at GSC will seek feedback and employ it where possible to weather the storm. CAP is really Carolina Auto Parts?
I live in Chatham County and use the UNC Commuter Alternative Program (CAP). Earlier this spring a bunch of cars had their catalytic converters stolen at the Chatham Park & Ride lot. My truck's catalytic converter was almost completely cut off when someone apparently interrupted the thief and he fled. At that time I wrote the UNC Police Chief expressing my concern that some commuter could interrupt a thief during some odd time and then be assaulted or killed. A large number of ladies, who work at UNC Hospitals, expressed concern for their personal security to me as we discussed the crime wave while riding to work.
Yesterday again several cars were hit, including mine. The first time in May it cost me $200 to repair. This time it will be over $2000 with the other damages. My deductible doesn't cover much of this. Will UNC? Why weren't UNC Departmental Parking Coordinators notified of this increased crime threat and ordered to inform the UNC staff? How many more criminal acts occur on these lots without a warning to the public of the risk? When does UNC become liable due to negligence?
I was a strong believer in the CAP. It is, in theory, a great service and a win/win for UNC and the employee. However, I cannot afford to continue to use it. Does someone have to be injured or killed in a parking lot before UNC secures the area? We can do Nobel Prize winning research at UNC, but cannot come up with a plan and implement that plan to secure a parking lot?
Here are some ideas:
1. Fence and gate the area. 2. Put up a camera that records license plates of vehicles entering and exiting. 3. Increase the patrols. 4. Hire an attendant and charge a couple of dollars a day for parking.
Why is this so difficult? Does someone have to die before action is taken?

Squash bugs? Probably not ... or not yet anyway.
If you look carefully at the squash flowers, you can discover two types: male and female. The female is characterized by a small squash-shaped ovary below the flower; the male flower does not have an ovary.
Typically members of this family that includes squashes, pumpkins, melons, and cucumbers have separate male and female flowers on the same plant. And apparently in an effort to attract pollinators before investing a lot of energy in ovaries, the plant first sets only male flowers for a few days to perhaps a couple of weeks. These flowers will fall off and never set fruit. No ovary, no fruit.
Then you start to get a mix of male and female flowers. If there is pollen transferred from the male to the female flower, then the ovary becomes a fruit and may ripen. At that point if the ovaries are falling off, it's a good idea to look about in the morning to see if there are any insects moving from flower to flower. Without pollination, the ovary dies.
If you don't have insect pollinators, you may be able to achieve pollination yourself by using something like a small paint brush or Q-tip to collect pollen and transfer it to the female flower. A fairly tedious process that insects accomplish for us so easily. You may benefit from planting a diversity of flowers around the garden to attract pollinators. Some folks may even benefit from tolerating more of those annoying carpenter bees that collect pollen in their daily activities.

Does anyone know who audits the use of these cards, besides the employee's manager?

I know folks like to answer questions via e-mail, so when I see a question I (and no doubt others) have, it is a disappointment not to see answers in the Chatlist.
I am having problems with all my squash and all my peppers and my beans, with the blossoms just falling off and no veggies. I daily pick off nasties (Japanese beetles, those tan squishy potato beetles, flea beetles, aphids, black/yellow ladybug types), so I see very little bug damage. My snow peas, early on, were very bountiful. And I saw hordes of bees on my lavender flowers, so the pollinators are around. Any clues? Please answer here, and then you can see if others already made the same suggestion, and answer this question for possibly many folks like me and Tinitap.

I have always steered away from off the wall conspiracy theories and wild speculations but I have entertained this thought . I know that there is a patent for a carburetor on file at the US patent office that converts water to hydroxy gas . This carburetor successfully powered a car around a community near a lake with several passengers for a Sunday afternoon drive . This car ran fine with no problems at all . It wasn't a special experimental hybrid it was a Model A ford in the mid 1930s . The auto industry at that time didn't embrace this idea due to oil money invested in that industry . The Japanese company Genpac has recently successfully shown its prototype smart car that runs on ,, you guessed it ,, water . The Genpac car is on You tube so go check out the video . Its no scam ,, its real and the oil companies know their days are numbered . In the past people that developed non oil fuel systems either got rich quick and developed memory loss or dead really quick . The oils companies problem with free fuel was always containable so we would be forced to depend on oil to travel . Then came a wonderful tool to prevent inventors from getting dead after developing new fuel systems ,, its called the internet . When the price of oil started its outrageous climb into space many started digging into old wives tales about gas saving devices to see if anything worked . The amazing thing is when people started finding out certain things worked they shared it with the world on the internet teaching others like me how to do this . People like me then took the basic working idea and started to improve on it . Japanese car makers aren't financially connected with oil companies . That's why their cars are so fuel efficient . The new OBD2 computer systems make any type of fuel improvement almost impossible . The cars are designed by nature to get a fixed mpg . This is by design I'm sure so the oil companies will always be in business .
In the process of learning how to squeeze more mpg from my gas I learned some things about gas . If you are old enough to remember the explosive nature of gas from the pre 1980s you will understand that gas vapors aren't as explosive as they one were . Years ago you could pour a small amount of gas on something and light a match 3 feet away and the vapor would ignite the fire . Now you have to literally throw it on the gas to get ignition . California mandated a cleaner burning fuel and jumped the oil companies to comply . Simply put they added certain esters to displace gas molecules so the fuel would burn more completely .. They can do this very ,very inexpensively but they wont do it for a reason . When gas vaporizes more efficiently you get a more complete burn lowering emissions and making more power using less fuel . If they improved the quality of gas everyone's cars would get better mileage and they wouldn't sell as much gas . I am personally convinced its all about money . If people could use water to fuel their transportation ,, oil companies would go broke ,, car engines would last far longer reducing the need to replace the vehicle , resulting in less sales at the dealerships . The need for oil related repairs would drop ,, vehicles would become cheap to keep . It would be very difficult to get road taxes on cars that didn't pay that tax at the gas pump on every fill up . I would bet you good money there are lobbyist in Washington trying to keep the new bio diesel and hybrid car technologies buried under paperwork so the oil companies can keep on screwing us .
I know it all sounds like one big conspiracy ,, I really don't believe in such things but its like my dad said ,, if it walks like a duck ;) Fortunately there are thousands of people like me now sharing their experimentation in the internet . We as a group have decided to experiment and see what works and disregard all the mainline taught reasons why you cant run a car on water and why a car cant get 100 mpg . The governor of the great state of California Arnold Schwarzenegger is no fool . He spoke with another pioneer in the fuel mileage trend Johnathan Goodwin and was so impressed he had his personal vehicle changed from gas to a biodiesel hybrid with a Duramax diesel engine . Johnathan Goodwin was featured on ABC nightly news with Charles Gibson recently for doubling , tripling and even quadrupling the mileage of vehicles . He uses current technology and old proven ideas that work to do this . This will be a revolution not against a government but against big oil money . Its not like fighting a war against someone you see as a threat with a gun but a war against people that are trying to protect their enormous profits . Big oil money runs deep in politics so don't expect any help from our government in this . Its up to us to stand our ground and become educated so we can free ourselves and our country from the oil addiction . Our addiction to oil makes us depend on oil like a crack addict depends on crack for their next fix . They cant see living without the crack and we cant see living without oil ,, but I'm telling you I know its possible .
I'm done with my opinions on oil now. I'm going back to sit on my stool and continue to put my new vapor charger fuel intermix cell together . It will covert gas to a vaporous mixture enhanced with pure oxygen and hydrogen form my HHO fuel cell . We will see what kind of mileage is possible with the old hot rod truck then . I may fail ,, but I have already doubled my trucks mileage from 8.5 to 17 plus and I still feel there is vast room for improvement . Goodnite Mark
I think you are generally misunderstanding the commission fees and I know I probably won't change your opinion. Commissions are always negotiable and there is no set fee. The reason the fees are 2% in England is because you can barely find a property for less than a half million.
If a realtor accepted a 2% commission for a $150,000 listing, here is how that would work out; the total commission on the sale would be $3,000 dollars, which would most likely get split four ways between the listing agent, listing company,selling agent and selling company. Each party who is invested in time, out of pocket expenses and liability/accountability would get a little over $700. In addition,there are other expenses that realtors pay to stay in business such as monthly access fees to the Mulitlist Serivice, errors and omissions insurance, office expenses, vehicle insurance, gas and auto maintenance, association dues, continuing education,...... The average realtorin the triangle is earning $25 to $30,000. We only get paid if your home sells or if you buy a home. The public can run you around for weeks and decide not to buy, not to sell, or to just fire you for no reason with no compensation owed. Most realtors are hard working, honest people who care about their clients and become trusted advisors and advocates for them. There is no way to summarize how much we do, and how often we do not get paid for what we do, but I hope this message will serve to at least let you consider that there is another side to the real estate industry. In response to the question about Horse Slobbers, the fungus that can cause slobbers in horses is Rhizoctonia leguminicola. It produces the mycotoxin slaframine which causes slobbering from the horse's mouth. This is known as Slaframine poisoning or "slobbers". Although Slaframine poisoning is caused by Rhizoctonia leguminicola, the slobbering can also be caused by other factors. If the clover was sprayed and killed a month ago I would look more toward another factor causing it rather than the fungus. This slobbering could be caused by mechanical or chemical irritations. The mechanical irritation comes from plants that have small barbs or sharp spines. When the horse eats the plant the barbs will irritate the mouth and can sometimes even be left behind stuck in the inside of the mouth. Some plants that can cause this type of irritation that are common to our area include foxtail barley, little barley, foxtail millet, hedge mustard, shepherds purse, pigweed and horse nettle. Buttercups, Pennsylvania smartweed or marigolds can cause a chemical irritation. Also since you recently moved here there is going to be a period of adjustment for your horses from one region to another. If the slobbering continues at the same rate or increases I would suggest contacting your veterinarian for professional help in this situation. It should be noted that most literature does not list this malady as a lethal problem. Does anyone know of a source for local bee pollen? It may be of value to people with seasonal allergies, especially those who are relatively new to this area.
This could be due to inadequate pollination. If the female flower is not pollinated (in this case by bees) then no fruit develop and the flower will drop off. Inadequate pollination can be due to insufficient populations of pollinators, or poor conditions for pollinator activity (excessive heat or rain, etc.). Squash is pollinated by both honey bees and native bees. Are you seeing any bees on the plants?
It is normal for male flowers to fall off after they shed their pollen but I assume you are describing the female flowers if you are not getting any fruit over a period of time.
If you suspect you don't have enough bees in your area to pollinate your crops then you can take steps to increase bee populations. You can become a beekeeper and/or plant foraging habitat for bees to attract them to your garden area. You can learn all about this at our Pollinator Week Celebration this Saturday from 10:00 am-2:00 pm at Chatham Mills. Please refer to my earlier postings for the complete details. As you most of your know the Jordan Lake Arts & Music Festival is just weeks away, 5 to be exact! And as the excitement mounts and the anticipation heightens, we at JLAM thought we would add fuel to the fire and involve the community in our efforts as much as possible!
As stated in the previous post, this inaugural event will be a fundraiser to aid in the Clean Jordan Lake project which is facilitated by seven different environmental agencies throughout North Carolina. With that being said, our first order of business will be to focus on the litter problem around the lake. We have come up with a catchy slogan that we think conveys the message quite well:

We have been brainstorming the best ways to get this information to the masses, most of which involve large fiscal investments which are challenging for a newly registered nonprofit organization. So... WE WANT YOU to help us brainstorm some creative and cost effective marketing, advertising, and promotional approaches to get our vision and slogan out there!
We will be holding a ticket giveaway for extra incentive. Simply reply to this post and the person that comes up with the most efficient way to spread the word will receive two tickets to the festival, wow!
