I'm not sure if you want to attend a class or you want to teach a class.
I've been a member of the Spa Health Club (now under some new company name... Spa sold out) and periodically enjoyed their NIA class.  It had been taught by a Pittsboro resident, Marty,  in the Chapel Hill Club.  I recently went in (after a slacker time away) and found they no longer offer NIA.
Boooo!  They told me a lot of people had expressed disappointment about its
absence and wanted it back.   So that would be a great place to apply, if
you would teach.  Or at least complain, so they would bring it back.  I sure would be happy about that.

The friends of the library has two sales a year and are already collecting for the fall sale. You can take your books to the library any time it's open and they will put them aside for the next sale.

Subject: A Land Transfer Tax Makes Sense

A Land Transfer Tax Makes Sense

Based on the population growth from 1970 to 2000, Northeast Chatham is
projected by the Triangle J Council of Governments to have 117,000
residents by 2035, growing at an average rate of 4.2% per year. (From
1980 to 2000 the growth rate was actually 5.0% per year, which would
increase the estimate to 146,200 for Northeast Chatham by 2035.)

How will Chatham County pay for the infrastructure needed to support
this burgeoning population?  Where will the funds come from for
schools, county office and social service buildings, water and sewer
systems, court houses, fire houses, and libraries?

Today Chatham County is “behind the curve” in meeting it’s exploding
infrastructure needs.  There is a $2,900 School Construction Impact Fee
paid by each new home built in the county, but this is not sufficient
to pay the cost of the new schools that are required, let alone other
county needs.

Currently all the rest of the funding is obtained via real property
taxes.  Certainly new residents will continue to pay such taxes.  Study
after study, however, has shown that new residential property owners
provide less in tax income to the county than is spent in services to
these new residents.  The only current way to pay for all the new costs
is to keep raising the tax rate on all of Chatham’s residents, new and
old.

Another way would be to impose a 1% Land Transfer Tax on all real
property sales.  Currently this method is permitted and being used by
six Eastern Counties in North Carolina.  It is a HUGE SUCCESS!
Adequate funding is being provided for infrastructure needs.
Residential and economic development is strong.  Capital needs are
being met, and in some cases, real estate taxes lowered.

For Chatham County to put a Land Transfer Tax in place, three things
must happen.  First, the NC Legislature must pass enabling legislation,
second, the County Board of Commissioners must approve the idea and put
it to a referendum vote, and finally we, the citizens, must vote to
approve the Land Transfer Tax.  There will only be such a tax, if we
vote Yes.

More details are available on the County’s web site. Also listed
there are members of the House and Senate Finance Committees.

I urge you all to support this enlightened way of financing our
infrastructure needs.  Email or write the above legislators and ask
them to support House Bill 711 and Senate Bill 1516, both of which
enable a Land Transfer Tax.

Subject: Pittsboro Farmers' Market

The Pittsboro Farmers' Market will be held again this Thursday at the
Fairgrounds, behind the Food Lion shopping center in Pittsboro from 3:30
to 6:30.

Last Thursday we had 17 or 18 vendors selling baked goods, breads,
cookies, jams and jellies, lots of hostas and shade plants, garden sets,
landscape plants and flowers and hanging baskets and goat cheeses. There
was lots of greens and all kinds of lettuces, lots of free range eggs
and pasture raised pork. There was pottery, gift cards and greenhouse
tomatoes and cucumbers, and probably more that I have forgotten.

This time of year there are new vendors with new products almost weekly.
Soon we expect to start seeing onions and asparagus, broccoli and
cauliflower and hopefully some strawberries, maybe before the end of
April, if it ever gets warm again.

At the market we always keep a pot of hot water, tea bags and instant
coffee, free to our patrons. Come on down, meet your friends for a cup
of tea.

The Pittsboro Farmers' Market is what is called a "Producer Only"
market. This means that you must produce it to sell it. This gives the
market and it's products accountability. You know who is growing your
food. And, by the rules of the Pittsboro Market all products must come
from within a 50 mile radius of Pittsboro. That is LOCAL.

See you on Thursday!

TWO SEMINARS FOR BUSINESS STARTUPS

There are two seminars coming up on the calendar sponsored by the Small Business Center that will be of interest to those contemplating starting a business.  The seminar on credit rating may actually have a much broader range of appeal.  Either is available to any Chatham resident.

April 17th.  The Ten Steps to Starting a Business.  Avoid the pitfalls.  Presented by Jesse McLamb of the Roper Group.  She'll cover the personal assets needed to start a business, your business structure, market research, developing a marketing strategy, pricing, record keeping systems, financial statements and the need for a business plan.  The seminar is held at CCCC Pittsboro Campus, Building 2, Conference Room 2 from 6:00-9:00pm.  The seminar is free but registration is required.  Call Continuing Ed. at 542-6495, ext. 223 to sign up.

May 3rd.  Your Credit Rating, What it Means, How to Fix it.  Most small business owners eventually need a loan.  Whether or not you qualify will in large part be determined by having a business plan that spells out how you will use the money and how you'll pay it back* and your personal credit rating.  This course is to be taught by Janet Wyatt, Chatham Mortgage Company, Pittsboro and will cover who tracks your credit, what determines your rating and what you can do to improve it.  The seminar is held at CCCC Pittsboro Campus, Building 2, Conference Room 2 from 6:00-9:00pm.  The seminar is free but registration is required.  Call Continuing Ed. at 542-6495, ext. 223 to sign up.

Is this a bad thing? Should drug tests be announced? Did these people break the LAW?
Should they keep their job for breaking the LAW? Maybe, FOOD LION should have benched

A Chatham County sheriff's deputy was killed early Wednesday in a single-vehicle wreck.

Deputy Aaron Gabriel Whitaker, 24, of N.C. Highway 42 in Carbonton, was off-duty when he was involved in an accident in
Moore County at about 2:45 a.m.

The wreck occurred on a rural road near Carthage, and Whitaker was thrown from his vehicle after hitting a power pole.

Whitaker joined the Chatham County Sheriff's Office two months ago.

Subject: yoga classes near downtown

Hey there,

I am lucky enough to have been offering yoga classes in downtown Pittsboro for 8 years now. (Wow!) It has developed into a wonderful, heartfelt, community gathering space, with classes held 6 times a week.
I have a new session beginning April 30th.
I use a waiting list so let me know if you would like to be on it and be invited to a future session or maybe even this next one!

The yoga classes nurture our need to awaken and to develop our human potential in a non-competitive environment.
Through breathing, meditation, movement and relaxation exercises, yoga joins body, mind, and spirit into a balanced whole. Almost immediately, your body responds and feels better, as yoga's cleansing action begins to rid your body of toxins and your mind of any negativity. This brings your body into a state that is receptive for healing. The poses activate and stimulate your circulation, digestion, elimination, the nervous system and the endocrine system. It is a slow, practical, thoughtful system for improving life.

If you would like to learn more contact Cathy Holt at 542-4103 or cholt...emji.net or go to my web-site address below.

Be well,
Cathy
