I'm new to the list. I live on Hanks Chapel and I'm a senior web
developer at a company in Raleigh...

Sunday around 11:30 AM, two dogs showed up in my yard and never left.
One is a young black lab (maybe mixed), the other is a young shepherd
mix. I've already reported them to shelters and local vets in case the
owners are searching. I'm fostering them until someone claims them. If
these are yours or someone you know, please email me.

don't mind the bees that much, it is the woodpeckers that feast upon
their young that can be an issue, an expensive one at that....so you
might want to limit the bees access to important structures....

The *bumble* bee

Over the last few days I have heard a bumble bee In my office . I heard it again last night in the house . I have seen the carpenter bees lately gnawing at my porch so I assumed one got in the house . I wasn't feeling good and I went all over looking for that bee and couldn't find it . The bad part is I have looked all over the shop for the same bee over the last few days . I keep hearing it buzz , buzz , buzz and I'm determined to find in and smash the noisy critter . I'm in the office trying to get the puter to load right and there it is again ,, buzz , buzz , buzz and I grabbed my flyswatter and looked for the dang thing . It got quiet and I laid the flyswatter down and continued typing . I heard it buzz , buzz again and I just reacted by hitting where the noise came from ,,, and smashed Tristan's cell phone ,,, set to VIBRATE when it rang ,,, I have been thinking the cell was a bumble bee for a week ,, I'm either getting old or losing my mind ,, It made me giggle when I thought about it and decided to pass it along to my friends so you can laugh with me or at me ,, either way I hope it makes you smile :)

(caprenter bees) cause no damage, and provide great entertainment.  They lived in the siding of our previous house in Raleigh for 50+ years, based on the previous owner's comments, "with no damage but a couple harmless, entertaining holes in the siding"

I disagree. My house doesn't have a couple of holes. I promise I can point out over 100. Further, the woodpeckers have discovered the delicious taste of larvae and tear up the siding from there. The bees clearly do not do structural damage to my home but the appearance will make it necessary for me to put new wood on the exterior before I sell.

Greg

ps Gene, I too am often compared to guys on tv. People say I look like Don Johnson only better looking and taller. ;)

Subject: Teaching in August

I must apologize to the month of August. I do in fact teach in August.
August is a fine month to stay in an overly air conditioned space,
learning to read, write and solve problems. For many children, this is
preferable to the alternative of watching endless hours of cartoons and
fending off parents attempts to get you to go outside "and have fun" in
the 95degree 100% humidity of central North Carolina.
That is exactly what makes the beach so marvelous in August. It is why
the french close up shop and head for the sea every August. I have been
able to go to the the beach several times in August, right before
school begins and I always arrive tan and rested and ready to work.
Thanks to the altruistic merchants and realty companies for providing
such a delightful method of relieving my family of so much money.

The problem with the current legislation or discussion of local control
is that the only way to accommodate AP courses for high school is to
move the start date back to the first of Aug. which means that teachers
would begin in the last week of July. This all goes back to my original
message and my aforementioned malignment of the august month of August.
I still think that AP students and those in need of more time for
school should start early. The schools are open and the air is on
standby. Surely an appropriate fraction of students could be served in
a facility that is even half open. We should explore other options
before we put everyone back in school in August (not that there is
anything wrong with August!)

You know February is a rotten month to teach. How about we take Feb.
off? We could all go somewhere warm.

"Subject: Produce Section

Give it just a few more days, and my grandpa will be back and I gaurantee you that your produce section will be straight "-

It is hard to tell if the above is legit-  But be assured I'll give "it" more than a few days- I have already stopped buy produce at Food Lion.  Shall we consider 10 days a "few" days? I am willing to bet that if there is a sudden change for the good, it will not last more than a couple of weeks.

Many people do not know that the Pittsboro Food Lion produce is not supplied by the same firm that supplies Siler City.  Compare the selection and quality of the stores and you will be shocked at the limited selection and quality of produce at Food Lion Pittsboro.

You  also probably do not know that Food Lion conducts unannounced drug tests on employees.  Three or four months ago, at least 6 (possibly more) Food Lion employees did not pass the test and were fired- in one day.  One in the produce dept., one in the meat department-

Pittsboro Food Lion apparently has an on-going problem with coolers for Milk and related liquid products- These products frequently sour or spoil before the expiration.

As far as Food Lion being "downtown"-  The parcel of land on which Food Lion was built was "the boonies" when I came to this area in the early 1970s-

Subject: Pittsboro Library Community Read: This Year Its for Kids of all Ages!

Each year the Friends of the Pittsboro Library chooses
a book for the entire community to read together. This
year's choice is "Because of Winn-Dixie," by Kate
DiCamillo.

We've scheduled a wonderful weekend of events to
celebrate this award-winning novel. There's something
for everyone, no matter how old or young. And it's all
FREE!

Friday, April 27 at 7:00 p.m.: Ellen Bland and her
Readers' Theater Class perform exerpts from the book
in the CCCC Multipurpose Room. Seating is limited, so
be sure to get your FREE tickets in advance from the
library or at Chatham Marketplace or McIntyre's Books.

Saturday, April 28, 3-4 p.m.: Kids art class with Kim
Greene at the library. This is also free but advance
registration is strongly suggested. Sign up at the
library.

Sunday, April 29, 1-3 p.m.: "Winn-Dixie Fest" at the
CCCC Walking Trail. Register your dog for the
Winn-Dixie act-alike contest, then take part in the
dog parade along the trail*. Make a "dump garden" or
recycled art sculpture. Fun for the whole family!
Free! (Rain date is Sunday, May 6.)

*your dog needs to be a good citizen, i.e., not
aggressive, must be leashed, and must be up-to-date on
his or her rabies vaccinations.

Pick up a copy of "Because of Winn-Dixie" at the
Pittsboro Library and read it aloud with your family.
Grab a set of the CDs and listen to it in your car. If
you MUST skip the printed word, we even have the movie
on DVD. And of course, it costs you nothing to borrow
these items from the library.

For Immediate Release
For Arts, Feature and Calendar Editors

April 28 at Chatham County Fairgrounds, Pittsboro:
ClydeFest offers hands-on arts fun for children of all ages

PITTSBORO --  Legendary chainsaw carver Clyde Jones and other artists will
conduct fun activities with children of all ages at the sixth annual ClydeFest
set for Saturday April 28 at the Chatham County Fairgrounds off of U.S. 64 west
of downtown Pittsboro (around the corner from the Food Lion shopping center).
This year's all-day festivities include hands-on arts workshops where kids
can decorate plywood "critters" with Clyde, get their faces painted, enjoy hula
hoops, African dancing, story telling,  crazy balloons and more.

The fun takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for
ChathamArts members, and $2 for children under 12; infants free. Refreshments
will be for sale including barbecue from the Barbecue Joint, as well as
desserts and vegetarian treats from Chatham Marketplace. For information contact
ChathamArts at (919) 542-0394, _http://www.chathamarts.org/_
(http://www.chathamarts.org/)

As always, Jones will help children paint and glitter wooden animal figures
they can take home as souvenirs. At the end of the day, Jones will create an
original "Clyde Critter" from a fallen cedar tree, to be auctioned to the
highest bidder, with proceeds to benefit ChathamArts, the nonprofit arts council.

Also on hand will be: Karen Tiede with hula hoops, Ubi the Clown with balloon
creations, RogerValente with storytelling, Stephanie Hope with African
dancing, and volunteers from Chatham Education Foundation, Woods Charter School and
Jest for Fun (UNC students) with an array of games and activities.

ClydeFest is an annual outdoor festival to honor Jones, an award-winning
self-taught folk artist living in Bynum. He uses his chain saw to create
three-dimensional animal sculptures from cedar limbs and found objects. His wooden
giraffes, deer and other "critters" have been exhibited all over the world. Though
they are not for sale, he often gives them away to friends and makes them
available for charity auctions.  Locally "Clyde Critters" can be seen at UNC's
student union and Crook's Corner in Chapel Hill, at Captain John's Dockside
Seafood restaurant in Colepark Plaza in north Chatham, in front yards all over
Bynum, at Pittsboro Town Hall, and at the Governor's Mansion in Raleigh.

ClydeFest is sponsored by ChathamArts, which supports arts in the schools,
promotes the work of local artists through a Pittsboro gallery and sponsors a
range of arts events and performances throughout the year. Co-sponsors include
Captain John's Dockside, Crook's Corner, The Barbecue Joint and Chatham
Partnership for Children.
