I have to simply speak out on this issue. I have been shopping in Pittsboro for roughly 20 years now, and I also frequent the market and the coop. Irregardless of complaints, the bulk of our shopping has been and probably will continue to be Lowe's. Why? I can get most everything I need there, and if I can't, the wonderful staff will order it in for me, given enough notice. I will not try to name them all personally, but they know who they are, from the manager, Randy, down to the stockers and baggers, John and Eddie. They do their best to maintain a nice storefront, but are so often overwhelmed with their loyal customers, it's almost impossible to keep up.
Unlike Food Lion, I never have to search constantly through a poorly laid out store for something..yeast is with flour, creamer with milk, canned goods with canned goods, etc. And I am not overwhelmed with pumped up displays of overpriced junk, except for a few well placed displays that don't impede your cart!
I love to go to the Co-op, and am often there, but can't always afford their prices on certain items. And we think the world of the market...look forward to their opening every year.
But Food Lion? No. Little too flash-cadillac, and not enough practicality. Often people on their front end are either very, very new and untrained, or even sometimes the older employees on the front are rude. The stockers seem to be the only ones in there who are friendly and willing to help you find an item that almost invariably is at the OTHER end of the store from where you expect it to be (another marketing strategy, most likely deemed by some higher-up to part you from more of your money as you fight your way past a million displays of quickie stuff).
So..thumbs up to our Lowe's ...I would be lost without them

I must say that I have to agree with Al on his posting; they are harmless to
us. What I like most about them is how territorial they are with other
insects. I've seen them chase off wasps, hornets, etc... from aroud the
house on so many occasions that I've lost count (it's entertaining as
well!!).

CONSTRUCTION CONFERENCE FOR GENERAL AND SUBCONTRACTORS
Contractors and subcontractors, including those classified as minority and disadvantaged, will learn how they may participate in Chatham's $100 million capital improvements plan and comply with the county's minority outreach plan.
On Friday, April 20th from 8:30am * 2:30pm, area contactors and sub-contractors are invited to the campus of Central Carolina Community College in Pittsboro to attend First Conference, an opportunity to learn about the projects included in the county's annual capital improvement plan (CIP), how to get certified to do business with the county and how to comply with its 15% set-aside minority outreach plan. The conference is sponsored by Chatham County, the Small Business Center and CCCC Department of Continuing Education.
Round-table discussions will be led by members from the Community College, the Small Business Technical Development Center (SBTDC), Hobbs Architects, Smith and Barnhill Construction and the county's CIP team. Topics to be covered include procurement practices, insurance requirements, formal bid methods, reporting and general statutes requirements, subcontractor selection process, role of the architect in the procedure with a special focus on the county's minority outreach plan.
The seminar cost is $20 per person which includes continental breakfast, lunch and handout materials. Pre-registration is required. Call 542-6495, ext. 223 for further information and to request registration forms.

Subject: comments on the Pittsboro Food Lion
Regarding comments on the Pittsboro Food Lion, I think people who are
disenchanted with it should talk to the store manager and let him/her know
what your thoughts and opinions are. Many people here simply have to rely
on these types of grocery stores and cannot afford stores such as The
Chatham Marketplace to shop on a regular basis. I can't even do that and I
make a decent salary. It is just too expensive to become my mainstay store.
Pet foods from veterinarians is way too pricey and grocery stores do sell
good, wholesome Purina dog foods. I am a Purina fan and have been for
several decades. To say that most of grocery store pet food is "junk" is a
bit of a stretch. Yes, there is junk dog food but if you are buying Purina
dog chow, Purina One, and others like this, you are buying a good quality
dog food. Pet owners should read the recall lists and look at the
production numbers and date. Not all pet food is on that list .... and most
of Purina's is not.

I had an Animal Control trap set at my house and this morning found a black cat with white chest, white paws in it this morning. (Not the cat I was trying to capture!) Before I could decide what disposition to make with the surprise visitor, an Animal Control officer appeared in order to check on the trap and wisked it away. Hopefully, this was not someone's pet, but if this sounds like yours and it's missing from the northern part of Siler City, please check with Animal Control. So sorry about what happened.

No...Wellness and Old Mother Hubbard foods and treats have NOT been recalled.
I recently received an email and letter from the Manufacturer of
Wellness-Old Mother Hubbard stating this fact.
They and many other small, independent natural petfood companies are very
conscientious about what ingredients go into their products. Quality control is
VERY HIGH on their list!

Spring break is on for me and my family and so I finally have the time
to read my favorite list of messages.
One recent listing discussed the current discussion about local control
of calendars. I am an elementary school teacher and so painfully aware
of the calendar and deeply appreciative of time away from my precious,
absolutely perfectly behaved first graders (supply your own eye roll of
disbelief). School is a great place for children to be for as much time
as can possibly be arranged. I think summer time does slow down the
rate at which children perfect their communication and thinking skills.
Spring break is right in the middle of the last push to teach reading,
writing, and math.
But without a break and a chance to relax, recharge, rethink, then the
job itself is much more challenging. TEACHERS need the break.
AG students need a break. AP and Honors students need a break. Low
performing students need a break.
I am concerned at how the academic needs of the upper grades effects
the way we run our lower grades, in many ways beyond the calendar
issue. Why can't the students who need more time show up early and
begin work earlier. I did that for sports in high school and it really
helped. Besides, summer gets boring for young people.
My summer break is not boring. I relish every moment and try to
squander every day with useless frivolity and family togetherness. I
garden, swim, discover and paddle. It makes me a better teacher.
I don't want to work in August because it is miserable. Little children
need run around time and it is muggy and heavy and icky to be on a
playground. In small family groups and at camp children can go to great
wet places that cool them down and let them explore nature. Inside an
overly air conditioned school house there is a very narrow lane of
discovery.
Please help us maintain perspective on our educational calendar. The
reasons for the current structure are complex and take in many
different needs for children, parents, businesses and administration.
Changing the calendar for one subgroup of learners should not have
negative impacts on other subgroups. We could set up an achievers
academy for those who want or need to go the extra mile. I am all for
midterm remediation and would consider working during my "vacation" (I
often do anyway).
I went to a year round elementary school and had 2 weeks off every nine
weeks with a 5 week summer. It was fantastic. My family could travel in
the offseason by camper to places our modest budget could support.
But please don't make me teach in August!
