Hey!
I wanted to thank everyone that sent me good info on our flea problem.. As I am trying to go for the source of the issue so, I will be using nematodes. I was sent a wonderful website of organic solutions to "pests" such as fleas and thought I'd pass it along. I talked to the company and they said it was safe for pets and didn't cause other problems in our environment. Please, before you use chemicals that dump into our water source and hurt the planet, consider using this option first. They have alot of different products for different problems.
Nematodes are microscopic worms that kill fleas by infesting their larvae. The nematodes come in a pellet or powder..just mix with water in a watering can or use a hose and spread them over the area you want treated.
A good site to purchase and get info is www.arbico-organics.com

Thanks to Gene for posting the link to solid information about Carpenter Bees. The 2 authors are both practicing entomologists from whom I have learned a lot over the years. They have also shared some highly philosophical discussions of the merits of tennis rackets vs. badminton rackets in addressing Carpenter bees. But I simply want to supplement what they have said with a local anecdote. This was shared with me from a Chatham home last year. I have permission to use it, and may have permission to share the author's name. But I'm not sure, so I'll leave the name off. J., you're welcome to take credit.
"Having a "live and let live" approach to our fellow critters, I enjoy a certain camaraderie with our sixlegged buddies. The farmhouse we live in has been here around 180 years, and the carpenter bees are just part of the spring fun.
"Their midair collisions and busy spring activities are seasonal, they don't sting, and the holes they inhabit in the wood are re-used generation after generation.
"We also have some arrays of mud dauber nurseries up under the porch roof. The subtle rainbow of their clay colors seem like a "Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval," declaring of our place - and probably yours - a worthy shelter.
"Two summers ago we rebuilt the porch, and I had a chance to see into the cedar and pine columns since there was some trimming involved. Rather than a nightmare of reckless perforations, what we saw was a modest number of holes, and no compromise of structural strength."
Now you have the science from the Entomologists, and the philosophy of a long time resident in and even older house. What more can you ask for?

Friends, While I was away, my "pet sitter" allowed my cat to go outside in a thunderstorm (or else failed to call him in), and he has run away. He's a neutered black male cat, and his name is "Xiao Mao" -- Chinese for "Bitty Kitty." (Pronounced "Shau Mau.") I live in the Hickory Haven subdivision about 9-10 miles WSW of Pittsboro, right beside the Hart's Creek subdivision. My property backs up on Hart's Creek. If you've seen my little Xiao Mao, I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know. Thanks. Brenda Denzler 542-2585

Chainsaw carvers know that dust from any of the nut trees, walnut in particular but also pecan, can cause nasty rashes on bare skin. What it does to your lungs is even worse. I've heard that the sawdust is toxic to horses and should not be used as stable bedding.
Biocides are killers, whether they come out of a labeled bottle or from "nature."

Faye Prosser, author of "The Smart Spending Guide", will be holding a workshop here in Pittsboro. We'd love to have anyone interested to attend!
The workshop teaches all the techniques for cutting your grocery bills in half (and more!). Class topics include the best stores to shop in the area, how local stores handle coupons (including policies on doubling coupons), finding, organizing and using coupons, using the weekly sales flyers, meal planning and so much more.
The workshop is three hours long and the cost is $15 per person. We need to have the registration pre-paid by cash or check to ensure we have enough folks for the class.
Each person receives a handout, resource directory and pen. There are freebies, coupons and door prizes, as well as a tremendous amount of information. In nearly every case, the cost of the class (and more) is saved easily in the first trip to the store using the techniques.
We are having a potluck at Noon and please bring your pantry extras for the CORA Food Bank here in Chatham. Childcare is not provided.
Here are the details:
Saturday, April 28th from 10 - 1:30 St Bartholomew's Episcopal Church 204 W Salisbury Street, Pittsboro
Please call 444-1186 for more details. Or e-mail us at chathamcoupons.gmail.com if you are interested in attending.
Thanks!

N.A. Booko complained about the produce at Food Lion and I agree. One thing she said that I wanted to address though is that if I am not buying it at the Chatham Marketplace where I can get the amount that I want....... , then when I buy produce, I just open the package and put the amount that I want in a produce bag. I have not had problems doing this and if you don't have a large family it is the only way to eat fresh produce. Cathy Holt http://www.cathyholtyoga.com

Right on! Pittsboro's "corporate" grocery concerns leave a lot to be desired. Until they shape up, buy produce at the Chatham Marketplace. The Pittsboro and Siler City Farmer's Markets will also soon be underway. That way, you're supporting a local business. Sure it may initially cost a little more, but you're keeping your money in the community and getting healthier food to boot.

I have to agree with the way that our grocery stores look in downtown Pittsboro. I always get a Health Food Alert about the deli at Lowes. They are always getting dinged for something. I want to know who owns the shopping centers where Lowes and Food Lion are at? I overheard someone that recently moved to the area out in the parking lot commenting how dirty in front of the store it was. Trash, Cigarette butts abound. The appearance of the dollar store is no better. Those two shopping centers need a good re-facing. Who wants to shop at them anymore. They are not appealing. The Lowes store is so old and it has been around forever. I want to say at least 13 years. The frozen section is still in the middle aisle. Very antiquated. They need to clean the area around the shopping center and the stores. If the owner lives elsewhere then what does he/she care what our downtown stores look like. Harris Teeter is much more appealing. Ace from Pittsboro

-------------------- 26 -------------------- Date: Tue, 03 Apr 2007 15:37:02 -0400 From: Carole Hoffman <choffman.hughes.net> Subject: Pittsboro Food Lion Produce
In response to the comments made about the produce at the Pittsboro Food Lion, I can understand your frustration. My solution has been to shop at Chatham Marketplace for all of my produce, if not from the farm directly (which isn't always possible). I have found their produce to be excellent and their attitude to be very friendly, concerned and conscientious. Not to mention that because much of their produce is from local farms the shelf life is much longer once you buy it. I can buy something on a Monday and a week later it can be still lying in my fridge in great shape, waiting for me to eat it. Now that I buy from Chatham Marketplace almost exclusively I end up throwing out a lot less food. That spells out big savings to me. When buying locally grown foods the food goes from the farm right to the store and we can literally buy it the next day. When we buy non-local food from "conventional" stores the "fresh" food can be quite old by the time the store gets it and then we may let it sit in our fridge (like I often do) for another week. Its hardly "fresh" by the time we eat it. Because the nutritional value diminishes with time the non-local produce we buy may have far less nutritional value then the locally grown produce. And with so many of the local farms growing either organic or sustainable foods they contain less or no harmful chemicals that will end up in our body when we eat them. Buying local is healthier for us and for our community. But there really isn't any need to go as far as to boycott Food Lion. After all, they do sell toilet paper. But then, so does Chatham Marketplace.
Don't forget to visit our local farms on the Annual Piedmont Farm Tour April 21st and 22nd to learn more about why buying local matters.

Great news!!! You know spring has sprung when the day finally comes around when we can all go to our local farmers’ market and buy straight from our neighbors!
Yes, that’s right, this is the week…
Thursday, April 5, is the opening day for the Pittsboro Farmers’ Market, open from 3:30-6:30 pm at the county fairgrounds.
Saturday, April 7, is the opening day for the Siler City Farmers’ Market, open from 10:00 am-1:00 pm at the corner of South Chatham Ave. and Chestnut St., 2 blocks south of the post office.
The Fearrington Farmers' Market will open on Tuesday April 17, and its hours will be 4:00 pm til early evening.
The markets have lots of new vendors this year so some check them out and support local agriculture!
Farmers' markers are a GREAT way to experience the "culture" in agri-culture, so I hope to see you there!
Visit Cooperative Extension’s Growing Small Farms website for more information on locations, products, vendors, and more: http://chatham.ces.ncsu.edu/growingsmallfarms/marketinfo.html.
I will be updating the website with new vendor photos and a new Siler City farmers' market website once the markets get rolling.
